Kaiju: The earth-shattering monsters who make us all feel like we just dropped three or four rungs on the food chain. They may be monsters, and they may level a famous skyline or two, but even so, there's nothing quite like sitting in a theater, popcorn in hand, and just reveling in the sheer unrivaled awesomeness of a titanic beast doing its thing for an hour or two.

Although the term for these colossal creatures originated in and is still most commonly used in Japan, television, games, and movies the world over have given giant monster buffs plenty to enjoy over the years. But which giant monsters really cast the largest shadows over all the rest? Here's a look at some of the world's most iconic kaiju, ranked by how iconic they are.

10 Gamera

Though originally largely discredited by the kaiju fandom at large as little more than a Godzilla wannabe, the giant nuclear turtle Gamera managed a late 90's Heisei era revamp trilogy so good that it single-handedly gave it a monster-sized reputation in Japan. Plus, a modest but highly devoted fanbase in the West.

Gamera's signature shell and his uncanny ability to fly (yes, really) make this kaiju one of the most easily memorable, and his pure, turtle-ey ridiculousness makes him one of the most lovable ones as well.

9 Mothra

These days, most associate the Queen of the Monsters with her older, atomic breath-wielding cousin, but before crossing over with the Godzilla series, Mothra appeared in her own film in 1961's Mothra, and ever since then her giant silk moth-inspired appearance has captivated audiences the world over.

Typically accompanied by twin fairies ൲(or just twin sisters in the MonsterVerse), Mothra is also unique in that she is almost always seen as a benevolent protector of nature and the Earth itself, somꦡething which is heavily reinforced by her elegant design and calm demeanor.

8 Kaiju (Pacific Rim) ꧃

Clifford the big red dog meets the qualifications for kaiju status, even if he isn't what first comes to mind.

By extension, the massive lovable mutt is also one of the most iconic kaiju ever conceived. Nearly as old as Mothra and older than Gamera by two years, Clifford's also been around long enough to be considered an icon in both children's books and giant, if not titanic, monsters.

6 Zetton

Hailing from the planet of light, Zetton is notable because it was the first giant monster the beloved Japanese tokusatsu film icon Ultraman ever faced off against. Fittingly, it was also the main antagonist in 2022's Shin Ultraman. The robotic alien superweapon is famous for its unique color scheme and design, as well as its sheer terrifying power.

Zetton has also been known to answer to a wide variety of equally interesting aliases throughout the years, the most common of which being the spectacularly silly subtitle "space dinosaur". With a name like that, what's not to love?

5 The Cloverfield Monster ꦆ

Often simply referred to as "Clover", the Cloverfield monster took audiences by storm in 2008 with the help of a wildly engaging ad campaign and a healthy reliance on J.J. Abrams' mystery box.

Cloverfield itself is impressive for being a found footage sci-fi horror that not only features a giant monster, but also manages to make said giant monster a legitimately threatening force to be reckoned with over the course of the film's runtime. It's hard to imagine any of that would be the case if Clover itself wasn't the iconic and terrifying creature it is.

More recently, this world-famous giant has been sized up exponentially from past depictions to allow him to stand toe to toe with traditionally much larger monsters in the recent MonsterVerse films, but even before 2016's Kong: Skull Island, King Kong has always held the duly deserved rank of one of the world's most beloved kaiju icons.

Let's be real here: if you're talking about giant monsters, you're talking about Godzilla. Known as Gojira in Japan (the name derives from two separate words, which collectively translate to 'gorilla whale'), this iconic Japanese giant has been terrorizing cities across the globe since 1954.

Sometimes Godzilla is a hero, fighting to restore the balance or to protect humanity. Sometimes, like in the original film and the 2023 Godzilla: Minus One, as a fierce destroyer. No matter how you portඣray him though, Godzilla is without a doubt worthy of being called the king of the monsters.
