One of the core mechanics in Tales of Middle-earth will be how the one Ring tempts you. While in the books this is a terrible thing for all involved, in Magic, it's almost always a net bonus. Every time the Ring tempts you, your Ring-Bearer gets just a little bit better, so you'll want to be tempted as much as you can.
Breaking of the Fellowship not only tempts you, but it could potentially eliminate two of your opponent's creatures at once. That's a win-win by any measure.
9 Oliphaunt
A six-power elephant with trample for six mana isn't exactly impressive. Giving another critter two more power and trample whenever they attack together is not bad, but what really puts Oliphaunt over the top is its Mountaincycling cost.
One mana to toss this dumb elephant in the graveyard and replace it with a mountain is superb for limited play. Keep an eye out for this guy when you're drafting Tales of Middle-earth.
8 ꦡ 𝔉 Cast into the Fire
If you want the best example of red flexibility, you're looking at it in Cast into the Fire. Need to poke two problematic creatures? Or how about getting rid of that indestructible artifact, like The One Ring? Cast into the Fire is how you do it.
Expect to see Cast into the Fire as a staple sideboard card while Tales💛 of Middl𝄹e-earth is in Standard, and maybe even in older formats too.
7 Smite the Deatဣhless 💛
Lookin♔g at the rest of the Tales of Middle-earth previews, indestructible ဣis likely to be a big problem for your average red mage. Smite the Deathless is one of the best ways to solve that problem.
An instant-speed three-damage removal spell that makes critters lose indestructible is just what the wizard ordered when it's time to get rid of that Mitrhil-coated hobbit. Another good option for both mainboards and sideboards.
6 Grishnakh, Brash I🍸nstigator
Grishnakh does a lot for three mana. You amass Orcs 2, which ensures you'll get at least three power whenever you cast him, but this card also temporarily steals a nonlegendary creature with less power than your amassed Orc army.
In the early game, Grishnakh can steal a creature for a big swing at your opponent's life total. Later after amassing more Orcs, you can steal bigger targets for even bigger swings. Consider pairing with the Book of Mazarbul for bigger and meaner orcs.
5 Mori♒a Marauder
Speaking of good cards to pair with 𝓀Grishnakh, Moria Marauder is an efficient two mana goblin that turns your entire orc and goblin army into potential card advantage.
With Moria in play, any orc or goblin that gets through to dea🌳l damage to a player lets you exile the top card of your library and play it that turn. Early aggression and late-game board-breaking make Moria Marauder an excellent card.
4 🔯 Fall of Cair Andros
You're going to want to pair Fall of Cair Andros with some intense burn spells, but if you do, you can amass a truly terrifying orc army. Fall of Cair Andros turns any excess noncombat damage into more orcs. And who doesn't want more orcs?
In the late game, Fall of Cair Andros just gives you a little extra targeted removal with all those mountains you've accumulated. A great pic for limited formats.
3 He💙w the Entwood
Hew of the Entwood probably won't be the best card to play in Tales of Middle-earth drafts, but it has a lot of potential for Magic's older formats. Sacrificing lands is a steep price, but potentially getting a big and expensive artifact into play is perhaps with the cost.
Hew of the Entwood looks like it would be the perfect addition to an artifact-heavy commander deck. Keep an eye out for this card when you're opening Tales of Middle-earth boosters.
2 There And Back Again 𝐆♒
This saga requires a huge investment. First it's five mana, which ain't nothin' for a red mage, and then it's two turns of fairly mediocre effects (although being tempted by the Ring is a nice bonus). But on that third turn, Smaug appears, and suddenly There and Back Again is worth the trouble.
Smaug is just a 6/6 flying dragon with haste, but when he dies, you get a whopping 14 treasure tokens. There's a lot you could do with that much treasure, not the least being a game-ending Assault on Osgiliath.
1 Spiteful Banditry 🍨 🌜
Another use for 14 treasure tokens would be Spiteful Banditry. Pay X 𓄧and two red mana, deal that much damage to all creatures, and then make a treasure token. And, because Spiteful Banditry is an enchantment, you make a treasure token every turn an opponent loses a creature.
Spiteful Ban🌟ditry can turn a losing game into a winniཧng game and is a surefire pick for red mages in Tales of Middle-Earth.
