You might think that the Summer of gaming news is over, but Bandai Namco has decided to keep it rolling into July with a Summer showcase at Anime Expo 2023. One of the big games that was confirmed to make an appearance at the event was Naruto: Ultimate Ninja Storm Connections and, although it didn't get a release date, we did get to see the new story mode in action for the first time.
Bandai started the show by talking about Ultimate Ninja Storm Connections, before quickly diving into a new trailer for the game that showcases its new story scenario, which was previously confirmed to star Boruto and have him going up against a red Susanoo. We see in this trailer that the red Susanoo doesn't belong to any Uchiha we already know, and in fact seems be linked to one of the two new characters revealed in the trailer.
Beyond the mystery of the Susanoo, the main focus of the trailer was showcasing a rematch between Naruto and Sasuke, along with teasing that the Fifth Great Ninja War is looming because of it. Although we know that it'll probably get resolved since this story likely isn't canon, the battle between the pair does seem to be pretty intense, with neither holding back any of their strongest moves.
We don't yet know why the two are fighting once again, but one shot of Naruto's eyes at the start of the trailer does seem to imply that he's been taken over by an evil force, which is backed up by Sasuke's comment about the roles being reversed this time around. We'll have to wait until the game's release later this year to find out the true reason behind the battle, and how Boruto gets caught up in it.
Naruto x Boruto: Ultimate Ninja Storm Connections has had a pretty rough time of it in 2023. Rumours of ⭕a new🦹 Naruto game first popped up in 2022, before being given a new lease of life thanks to the game's title getting trademarked earlier this year. Although many were hoping for a brand-new game, the reveal trailer at Sony's February State of Play was🍸 met with some backlash as it focused more on the repackaged elements from the first four Storm games.
Since then, Bandai has slowly revealed more of the new features coming to the game, including several ಞhighly-r♔equested characters like Baryon Mode Naruto and new versions of Boruto and Kawaki. It's also been made clear from hands-on impressions of the game at various events that the battle mechanics have actuallไy beeꦬn changed up significantly since Storm 4, which has washed away some of the criticisms.
