Tomb Raider: The Angel of Darkness is generally agreed to be the worst 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:Tomb Raider game in existence, at least of the main series. 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:It's so bad that no era even wants to claim it, with 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:the Or🅺iginal Era ending with Chronicles, and 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:t🍒he Legend era kicking off with Legend, leaving Angel of Darkness flailing in the middle. The attempt to reinvent Lara as a gothic, urban heroine was a colossal misfire, and while some look on the game these days with a campy fondness, that's only because it's reputation is so poor that some find it to be better than they feared when venturing in for the first time.
As a kid who had played every Tomb Raider until that point via picking up used copies and bought Angel of Darkness on launch day like a sucker, let me stress that the game was t🌳errible at the time, and it still sucks now. 🥃However, the serve is immaculate. We need that back.
Lara has lost her drip recently. Th༒e original design with the red shades and the turquoise tank top is iconic, though I personally prefer the brown tee and cargo shorts of the Legend era. In Legend especially, there were an array of mission-centric outfits (like the bomber jacket, cocktail dress, and return to turquoise) as well as unlockable extras to dress Lara up in a variety of different ways. What I always loved about these outfits was the respect they had for Lara.
Okay sure, it maybe wasn't that realistic for her to be running around the jungle in shorts and a t-shirt, but they never unnecessarily objectified her or poked fun. They were a celebration of her, especially the Spice Girls Brit Power Union Jack top.
Since then though, Lara's sense of style has vanished. The Survivor trilogy introduced a more grounded version of her character, with her trapped on an island in a bloodstained vest and cargo pants. Throughout the trilogy, some more outfits were introduced, but they seemed to conflate realism with dullness. When Lara wears her biker jacket or mountain coat in Rise of the Tomb ⛎Raider, she's styled without flair in the most drab interpretation of each outfit.
When we unlock the long-sleeved t-shirt for her, it fittingly arrives in a washed out shade of grey. Shadow let you unlock more fantastical outfits to go with the setting, but these went too far in the other direction, kitting Lara out in feathery tribal gear that clearly only suited very specific situations. The next game will attempt to tie the previously-unrelated Survivor and Legend eras to🦹gether though, so that could change things.
While the Lara of Survivor is practical and boring, Legend's Lara is an exciting action hero, and has a drip for every occasion. I have 🏅my doub🅰ts over just how well this marriage of eras will work, but if it brings back the style, maybe it's worth it. This is where Angel of Darkness comes in. While I won't give the time of day to its contrarian defenders, Angel of Darkness did two things right. First off, it understood that Lara needed to change after five games of pretty much the same thing, and secondly, it tried to make Lara cool. Though it went a little far and strayed into hyper-edgy, it knew that Lara was an action hero with bite - the Survivor Trilogy makes her seem like your big sister on her gap year.
As the Survivor Trilogy merges with the Ghost of Lar📖as past, hopefully, it can give up its obsession with realism. Lara was never a Dead or Alive jiggle-physics character, and there's a vast ocean between looking generic and being objectified, but the Survivor games refused to even dip their toes in that water. I don't want Angel of Darkness back, but if the next game was Lara in double denim with thick shades and black lipstick, I'd be all in.
The Survivor Trilogy proved it’s not as easy to style Lara Croft as you might expect, so Angel of Darkness deserves some credit there. It's still popular (as a meme, if not as a full game experience) in the fanbase too, with the AoD outfit a popular mod for all of the PC Tomb Raiders. There's a lot to worry about with the next Tomb Raider game, as well as a lot to get excited about. Whatever Lara does next, I just hope she looks good while doing it.
