They’re procedurally generated and the worlds within are determined by which cards you play. For example, you can craft a Major card to determine the world’s biome - Forest, Desert, or Swamp🅠 - as well as a Minor card, that determines what sort of Points of Interest will spawn on the map like puzzles, treasure hunts, or boss battles.
On top of the two Major and Minor cards, you can play a third card while in the world itself. These alter your surroundings drastically—my favourite was the Thinly Veiled card, which reduces gravity, allowing you to run faster while jumping and gliding further. This made exploration much more enjoyable, as seemingly impassable cliff faces and huge gorges were now easy to traverse. These cards are interchangeable and can be swapped out as many times as you want, basically allowing you t🎶o customize your world on the go. At the moment, they can’t be stacked on top of each other, but that is something the developers are considering in the future.
This sort of customization is already fleshed out - with dozens of different🎃 combinations available - but what it really promises is a completely blank canvas for the expansion of the game in the future. Nightingale only plans to stay in early access ﷽for “less than a year”, according to Inflexion Games CEO Aaryn Flynn, but he says that “the full release is just the start.” .
Much of Nightingale’s future content is planned like a live-service game. World events, new raids to be enjoyed with friends and strangers, and special events thꦕat sound like something more MMO than survival crafting.
NOTE: That being said, there are no in-game purchases—it will operate like a continued early access. While Nightingale can be enjoyed in single-player, some of its best moments were during the co-op session I had with the develop𒈔ers and other journalists. Watching everyone glide with their umbrellas over a vast desertscape towards our next objective was fanꦐtastic.
Each world supports up to six players, and don’t worry if you don’t have anyone to play with. You can make your realm public at any time, allowing other players to jump in. During the endgame, there are plenty of opportunities to find players to do Vaults with - endlessly repeatable endgame dungeons which can be farmed for Essence, use🦋d to purchase new outfit sets and special items - at a social hub. This space supports 30 players at a time, and it’s sold as a place for players to connect, and more importantly, show off their cool gear.
What’s very exciting about Nightingale is that all the game’s servers are dedicated, hoste🔯d by Inflexion Games. You won’t need to rent a server to play with your friends, and you won’t need to leave your PC on so your pals can play when they want on your realm. Character progression is also tied to your character, which means you and your friends can complete the same challenges, or just spin up a new realm and explore some fresh stuff together.
Once a realm is generated by a player, any time they use that specific combination of cards, they will be ret🐼urned to the same realm. Progress there is saved, including anything you’ve built or changed anywhere on the map. Don’t worry about running out of stuff to do, though, because each player can generate the same realm with their own cards. With six players in a party total, and an endless number of strangers to play with, the size of Nightingale suddenly becomes enormous. I can’t even do that kind of math.
I admit I had some doubts going into Nightingale, especially off the back of mega-hits like Palworld and the more niche but still brilliant Enshrouded, but my playtime so far has only made me more curious about what sort of game Nightingale is. The aesthetic speaks for itself in most cases, a Victorian steampunk world where you can fly using an umbrella already puts it out of the realm of most survival crafters. But beyond that is the potential of its li⛎ve-service model - something akin to Destiny, or at least that’s what I like to imagine. Huge events that bring the players together and give them something to talk about. Like Valheim’s huge but disparate updates, but enjoyed as a community rather than with your small group of friends.
