Nintendo’s latest sales figures have revealed that the company’s newest console has almost outsold its fir🌃st, as the Switch is close to outsell🙈ing the NES.
The Nintendo Entertainment System was Nintendo’s first foray into the console market and it helped to save the industry following the video game crash of 1983. If it wasn’t for the NES and its library of killer titles, then the video game industry as we know it would look very different. The NES library might seem antiquated by today’s standards, but games like Super Mario Bros. and The Legend of Zelda helped codify and define vid☂eo ga𝓀mes as we know them.
The Switch has seen incredible success since it launched in 2017 and it has already outsold several Nintendo systems, including the GameCube, the Nintendo 64, and the Super Nintendo. The Switch is close to passing another milestone, as latest sales figures have revealed that the console has sold 55.7 million units since launch. This number meanಌs that the Switch is close to outselling the NES, which has sold 61.96 million units since it was first released.
Nintendo has some generous forecasts for the 2021 financial year, with the company expecting to sell another nineteen million Switch units. This means that the Switch will almost certainly have outsold the NES by the next financial report. Once the Switch has outsold the NES, the next milestone to beat is the Nintendo 3DS, which sold 75.77 million units throughout its lifespan. After that, it’s the Game Boy Advance, which sold 81.51 million units throughout its lifespan. If the Switch can beat those two systems, then it will enter the pantheon of the best-selling Nintendo consoles of all time, as it will be facing off against the Game Boy, Ninte𝓀ndo Wii, and Nintendo DS, all of which sold over one hundred million units throughout their lifespan.
The reception to the Nintendo Switch has been staggering since launch. The system has also benefitted from the self-isolation period in 2020, with consoles becoming hard to come by as people look for a way to entertain themselves while in lockdown. The Switch has some incredible titles and the hybrid console/handheld gimmick is a great one. The Switch’s 2020 schedule might not be looking too hot (outside of the behemoth that was Animal Crossing: New Horizons) but the✅ future is bright for Nintendo’s latest s๊ystem.
