Everyone starts the game with a recipe for an item called creature pellets (advanced bait is no longer needed). Before you can successfully approach animals, you'll need to craft creature pellets. These can be crafted using 60 carbon, and you can carry 20 pellets in a stack. You'll never need more than that.
