I’m of the opinion that games shouldn’t be remade unless they were first developed for systems that are no longer supported. For example, the PS4 was launched in 2013, the year that 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:The Last of Us came out for PS3. The game was remastered for the new system the next year, which didn’t seem particularly necessary – and it’s baffling to me that just eight years later, they did a PS5 remake, especially when 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:the PS4 iﷺs no⭕t going anywhere anytime soon.

168澳洲幸运5开奖网:Obviously, it was a cash grab, perfectly timed to coincide with the release of HBO’s adaptation of the game – clever marketing (sales skyrocketed after the show started airing), but in my eyes, still unnecessary. Most of the improveme💮nts were graphical and NPC AI-based, and realistically, 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:even the visual168澳洲幸运5开奖网: improvements w⛄eren’t tha🌠t big a jump. Sure, the PS5 has much more juice than its predecessor, but we all know it was abo♊ut ෴the money, not the graphics.

What did deserve a remake? Resident Evil 4, apparently. Reviews for the game have just come out, with extraordinarily high scores more or less across the board. Features Editor Eric Switzer 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:reviewed it for TheGamer – though the original game, made for the GameCube, was widely considered a masterpiece, the remake improved on 💟what already existed, removing much of the bloat that held the original back. Released in 2005, the remake arrives 18 years later – this game definitely benefited from a fresh pe🗹rspective.

There are a number of other remakes coming out this year, but that’s not really surprising since nostalgia-mining is in right now. Many of these remakes will probably be more remaster than reboots, like the recently released 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:Dead Space, but I’m hoping for more reimaginings of source material like 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:Final Fantasy 7 Remake.

I suspect that the current trend of video game remakes is heavily influenced by the success of movies that do the same thing, though those are more often reboots. Spider-Man has been done with three different actors in the last two decades, or several more if you include 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:Into the Spider-Verse. Batman has been reimagined even more often. The Exorcist is being remade, Scream was released🍃 last year and billed as a ‘requel’ (part reboot, part sequel), The Little Mermaid is the latest Disney movie to go live-action, I could go on. Consumers are far more comfortable with familiar reimaginings of things they already hold warmth for, instead of embracing new ideas they might not gel with.

I’m more interested in fresh ideas than I am in regurgitated IP that’s already been used half to death. Telling new stories with old characters is cool, but rarely well done because creators feel the need to pander to an existing fanbase. But it’s precisely this fanbase that keeps studios cominꦑg back to popular IP – it’s a safety net, stopping whatever you make from fading entirely into obscurity, because at least you have a handful of diehard fans who will want to see how you refresh what they’ve already experienced.

I want to see more fresh ideas, more 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:Everything Everywhere All at Once, more 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:Disco Elysium, more 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:Kentucky Route Zero, more 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:TÁR. We don’t need to see the same damn games over and over, remade every handful of years for shiny new systems when the old one works just fine. Besides that, not everything is worthy of♑ a remake – maybe when this trend has passed and we’ve all emptied our wallets out of a desire to relive the past, we’ll finally come to terms with this.
