Ashurbanipal can struggle economically at first compared to other rulers, so expect to lean on your noble families and shrines to make up the difference. He starts with only a single living family member, his older brother Shamash-Shum. Shamash-Shum is a capable general and can easily fill Ashurbanipal's shoes if the king dies early, but you may want to influence him early on since he's bitter about being passed over or succession.

Despite having Shamash-Shum as a backup, Ashurbanipal should get married right away to rebuild the family tree. In the meantime, Ashurbanipal is best used leading armies to glory wherever it can be found. Assyria needs early military victories to stay competitive, so if your first wars don't pan out you might want to consider restarting.

7 Hattusili

The Hittites are geared toward building a strong economy capable of financing a large cavalry and chariot force, but Hattusili's reign will require a bit of juggling to make that happen quickly. His Judge archetype is best used in conjunction with the Hattusan Trader family to establish early income. This is important for building improvements in a timely manner since the Hittites lack Stonecutting at the start of the game, and you may need to purchase Stone.

Hattusili is the type of ruler who is better for setting up his descendants for success than making a name for himself personally. The Hittite pantheon has plentyꦺ of r🍨esource adjacency bonuses to exploit, and they work well with the economically-minded families.

Hattusili's biggest advantage may be his starting heir, a grandson named Mursili. At only six years old, Mursili can be educated however you like to set up an ideal succession. Unfortunately, the rest of Hattusili's family won't be much help - the king's disinherited children start the game off royally upset and will likely do more harm than꧟𓃲 good if given jobs.

6 Dido

The Mother of Carthage is the best diplomat in Old World, able to broker peace and even alliances with any tribe or nation she encounters. She begins the game with Divination and Aristocracy unlocked, letting her build Shrines right away, all of which have strong adjacency bonuses. With Aristocracy, she can pass Centralization very early, providing the capital with a research boost to exploꦆit over the course of the game.

Like many rulers, Dido has a single jealous relative, but Pygmalion of Tyre is excluded from the line of succession. As useful as it would be to engineer a political marriage with Dido, it's much safer to marry into your starting noble family right away to secure succession.

While Dido is an excellent diplomat, her descendants might not be. If you plan to take a military approach to Carthage be sure to include the Barcid family as their seat will be able to produce elephant units even without the necessary resources. Just be wary of political marriages with the Barcids in play - as Riders, they disapprove of a leader with a foreign spouse.

5 Cyrus

The King of Persia is a much better military choice than Ashurbanipal, starting with Ironworking, Trapping, and Husbandry all in one neat package. As a Hero archetype, Cyrus can easily dismantle enemy armies with his Launch Offensive ability, lettin𒁏g units adjacent to his own attack twice in a turn.

A Persian city w🍸ith plenty of hunting and fishing can be an amazing source of income when overseen by the Mihranidꩲ Hunters, especially with Shrines of Mithra and Anahita boosting nearby production.

Cyrus' only starting relative is his grandfather Astyages. The old man's high Wisdom gives a slight boost to research, but he can't be assigned as a Governor which limits his usefulness otherwise. The mythical founder of Rome is a fantastic all-rounder who can move his empire in any direction with relative ease. His status as a Tactician and access to Ironworking favor a somewhat militaristic approach best used for clearing out barbarian camps and settling their lands.

Rome can easily build strong cities, with two families t🐈hat can provide Civics for assigning Governors and passing Laws. They can build Hamlets from the start of the game, which should be done as soon as possible to give them time to grow into thriving Villages and Towns.

Your starting heir is Remus, Romulus' twin brother and a Schemer. Like Astyages, he's useful for his high Wisdom, but he poses much more of a threat. Rome will sometimes get an event allowing them to adopt Seniority succession, making the twins' mother Ilia the heir instead. If this happens Remus will usually kill her, giving you an excuse to banish or execute him.

3 Nebuchadnezzar 🌠

Babylon has a good starting position, especially if they are able to grow their early cities without being bothered. Their economy-😼friendly families give them plenty of resources to work with early on regardless of how the map looks on the first tur𒁏n.

Nebuchadnezzar himself is a Scholar, allowing you to redraw your available techs once for a better shot at the ones you want. You probably won't get much of a chance to use his Governor abilities since they require some advanced buildings that aren't likely to be available in his lifetime, but his Wisdom provides a nice research bonus that pairs well with the Amorite Sages and the Shrine of Naru.

Nebuchadnezzar has arguably the most stable family dynamic in the game, with no rivals, a wife and a daughter. Princess Kashshaya starts with a Wisdom score even higher than her father's making her an exceptional governor for an Amorite city once she comes of age. Find an ideal marriage for Kashshaya - ideally one that can be leveraged for peace with your nearest neighbor - and Babylon's future will be easily secured for the first half of the game and beyond.

Hatshepsut is able to quickly establish her starting city with half-cost Workers. While she can also pass a Labor Force Law immediately, it's a better use of your starting Civics to immediately establish Hatshepsut as Governor of Waset for an even stronger start.

Stonecutting and Ironworking make it easy to make use of your cheap Workers and defend your interests with Warriors, and if you have good sources of Stone you can even get started on Roads right away! Egypt's pantheon and families are suited for building large, valuable cities rather than conquest, so your military will largely be 🌠focused on defense.

Hatshepsut also benefits from a mostly drama-free family situation, with both an heir and a spare. This frees you up to take your time finding a consort for the queen, marrying where it's politically advantageous. Add their exceptional Hoplites into the mix, and it's no wonder Old World uses the Greeks as the tutorial faction.

Philip is a capable general, but at thirty-nine is the second-oldest starting ruler after Hattusili. If you know your history, though, that's not a problem. Alexander starts the game in a fantastic position to take over in the event of Philip's death, with an unbelievable Courage stat that makes him the best starting general available. You'll have to wait a few turns to assign him a command since he starts the game at thirteen years of age, but once he reaches his majority you can select his trait, giving you a degree of customization over one of history's greatest military minds.
