The Paper Mario series might be returning, but it might not be part of the genre that fans remember, as the official Nintendo website refers to Paper Mario: The Origami King as something other than an RPG.

The first RPG based on the Super Mario Bros. series was Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars, which was developed by Square Enix (then known as Squaresoft) and released for the Super Nintendo in '96. Following Square falling out with Nintendo, the next Super Mario Bros. RPG was Paper Mario for the Nintendo 64🔴, which starred a 2💖D Mario in a 3D world made of paper.

Nintendo has just announced Paper Mario: The Origami King for the Nintendo Switch with a gameplay trailer that seemed reminiscent of the other entries in the series. It turns out that fans expecting tactical turn-based combat might be in for a disappointment. According to the description of Paper Mario: The Origami King on the official Nintendo  (as pointed out by Nibellion on Twitter), the༒ game belongs to the action and adventure genres, rather than bei🧔ng an RPG.

Paper Mario: The Origami King isn't the first entry in the series to belong to a genre other than RPG, as Super Paper Mario on the Nintendo Wii was a 2D platform game set in a world that the player could revolve. The majority of the Paper Mario games have b♚een RPGs, so long-tim🍰e fans of the series will likely be disappointed by this change in direction.

The footage of Paper Mario: The Origami King that has been released so far has been impressive and the Nintendo Switch badly needs more games to fill out its summer schedule. It's a shame that Paper Mario: The Origami King isn't quite what fans might expect, but one of the biggest complaints about Paper Mario: Color Splash was that it was too similar to the previous Paper Mario game.✃ A change in direction could be what help𓄧s to revitalize the series.

Paper Mario: The Origami King will be released for Nintendo Switch on July 17ꦑ, 2020.
