Saori Hasegawa is a side character exclusive to the female route in Persona 3 Portable. As a result, there’s a good chance that a lot of players missed out on what is by far one of the most interesting side characters in the entire game. Her storyline deals with vicious bullying, the spreading of false rumours, and even grief. It’s certainly tough to get throu♑gh, but it is worth every second.
What makes her such a great character is that she’s written with the same quality and nuance as a lot of the main characters. Her story is instantly relatable as it fairly realistically portrays not only the infamous extent of bullying in Japan but also j💝ust bullying in general. Her plight and struggles are not abstract or difficult to interpret, they’re tragically apparent and likely familiar. However, her storyline is not entirely sorrowful, and when you convince her to stand up for herself against the bullies and false rumours, she proves to be a strong and more than capable wo𓆉man.
4 Mr. Ono

We've all had that one teacher. You know the one we’re talking about. They’re always into their subject just a little too much. They’re too passionate, maybe even a little eccentric. You never pay attention because being passionate about something is lame when you’re a teenager. You know the one. Well, Persona 3 has that exact teacher - well quite a few of them actually - in the form of Mr. Ono. History teacher by day, Sengoku expert by, well all the time, Mr. Ono is a truly fascinating character. And he’s barely in the game.
Teachers in Persona games exist to liven up the school portions - unless you’re a gym teacher in Persona 5. He’s humorous, quirky, and makes learning about history surprisingly fun. President Tanaka - or TV Tanaka as he’s more informally known - is one of the more interesting side characters in Persona 3. It’s quite a s♕weet transition and one that the Persona games don’t tend to include very of🍸ten.
In a series that’s usually about bad people doing bad things, or good people having bad things done to them, seeing the relatively wholesome change in TV Tanaka is really nice. Sure, he teaches you some questionable and morally dubious business practices, but isn’t that what friendship is all about? If you feel like crying while playing on your PSP, then how about you meet up with the wonderful elderly couple, Bunkichi and Mitsuko Kitamura. These two lovely folks are incredibly sweet toಌwards the player, going as far as to give them gifts that you really shouldn’t refuse. They’ll start to feel like surrogate grandparents within the game, whi🙈ch is a nice change of pace from all the death and trauma.
Of course, that is until you explore their backstory. Their whole story is incredibly sad, and while it eventually has a happy resolution - one that beautifully explores the mu🀅ltifaceted nature of grief and🀅 the acceptance of loss - we can’t help but cry every time we experience it. They’re amazingly written characters, and absolutely deserve a spot on this list.
1 Mutatsu

Mutatsu is the brash, uncouth, and often rude monk who you’ll find drinking his sorrows away. He’s initially cruel to the player, and it’ll take a lot to gain his confidence and ultimately friendship. Like Bunkichi and Mitsuko Kitamura, Mutatsu has a rather tragic backstory that explores loneliness, owning up to one's wrongdoings, and accepting responsibility for your actions.
It’s handled with all the nuance you’d expect from this phenomenal JRPG series, but that doesn’t make it any easier to experience. Mutatsu’s story of abandoning his wife and child is tough. While he eventually owns up to his mistakes, it’s hard not to reflect on the past. However, it really is nice to see a positive resolution and to send him back to his family.
