9 Cerberus

How Cerberus Mirrors Koromaru

Despite Hades being a neutral place in the original Greek myths, Persona 3 Reload's depiction of Cerberus pulls more heavily from the Christian depictions of the realm of the dead. While Cerberus isn't specifically one dog in the myth, it is a Doberman specifically, a dog often associated with hellhounds (think Pokemon's Houndoom).

Aigis' starting Persona is known as Palladion and alludes to the Palladium, a wooden statue symbolizing hope and protection. The Palladium takes on the form of a deity or holy figure. The original Palladium was created in tribute to Pallos, the daughter of Triton, who was struck down by Athena accidentally in combat. Slowly, new versions of the statue would merge both women.

This is the version Aigis' Persona takes inspiration from, featuring the same golden armor and helmet that Athena is known for while maintaining the face of Pallos. Palladion's exclusive use of physical techniques is likely a reference to Athena's role as a warrior, and the resemblance to a statue that opens into a mechanical drill could be influenced by Aigis' robotic nature and lack of personality at the beginning of her story. What makes Palldion a good design is how its design embodies the myth filtered through Aigis.

7 Lucia

Supporting Them All

Fuuka's first Persona is Lucia, a figure from Christian lore rather than Greek myth. In contrast to the other S.E.E.S members' Personas, Lucia doesn't incorporate much of Fuuka at all. Instead, her design is inspired entirely by her story as a martyr for the Christian faith. Her bandaged head, eyes, and throat are a reference to the torture Lucia received, including the sliding of her throat and removal of her eyes.

The red skin of her face could further allude to 🍒the attempts to burn her alive or the general torture she suffered, while the large blue sphere in her center is similar in shape to an eye. Lucia was often depicted with blue eyes, eyes even becoming a symbol for her. While a striking design, the lack of incorporating Fukka does hurt it a bit.

6 Nemesis

Vengence Is A Cycle

Ken's initial Persona is Nemesis, the Greek god of Vengence. Ken's Persona is unique since it is the only one opposite its user's sex. It also bears little physical resemblance to the Greek god. Its design is primarily black with two large golden eyes, notably lacking any of Ken's signature orange. The choice to use Light skills is likely a reference to her divine origin. The appearance is also incredibly symmetrical, which could allude to the fact that Nemesis would punish anyone's pride, hubris, or sin.

The most notable feature is the massive buzzsaw on the Persona. This design choice not only makes Nemesis look like a children's toy, which matches Ken's young age but could reference how revenge is a never-ending cycle that'll hurt those involved. Ken's story delves heavily into this theme, and Nemesis embodies the clarity he later finds through the game.

5 Io

Princesses Silent In Grief

The first Persona Yukari uses. Io is depicted as a beautiful maiden sitting on a throne shaped like a cow's head. While she is sometimes said to be a princess or priestess, Io's story is always one of tragedy, as, after an affair with Zeus, she is transformed into a cow to avoid the wrath of Hera, Zeus' wife. It is only through her patience and perseverance that she returns to her human form.

The tale explains the cow throne Io sits upon. Notably, the cow appears beautiful, just as Io was. She is also shown to be chained up, referencing how she was trapped in this state, admired for beauty by Zeus, but now left to wait until she can be free. Her design takes other elements from Mitsuru, such as her long open sleeves, boots, and neck scarf.

That isn't to say that no aspects of her origin snuck in. Her breastplates having different designs could allude to how the myths claim amazons would cut off one of their breasts to be better fighters. The white and blue color scheme and crown tie the look back to Mitsuru with a royal theme since she is the Empress Arcana.

Always Together

Polydeuces and Castor are the Personas of Akihiko and Shinjiro. They're designed to complement each other as much as their users. Both have built bodies that emphasize their strength, with armor inspired by the chest plates of Greek armor. Whereas Polydeuces has several light colors, Castor is colored dark. Polydeuces' light colors could also reference his immortal status, while Castor, sitting on a horse, notes how he was the better rider of the two brothers.
