The stories are good, the combat's fun, and the ever-increasing, positively dizzying, number of side activities make for a splendid experience. But ever since Persona 3, it's those Social Links/Confidants that stick in most of our heads the most. Even before Persona 3, there were standout people aplenty.

We're taking a look at every Arcana, and daring ourselves to determine the best character each Arcana has to offer. This is, of course, merely our opinion. We hope you'll enjoy our struggle.

The Fool: Igor

Whether you consider Persona 5’s Fool Arcana as belonging to Igor, Yaldabaoth, or (most likely) a mixture ofဣ the two, it’s our recurring long-nosed friend we tend to think of first here. Admittedly, most folks are likely to ponder the protagonists Makoto Yuki/Kotone Shiomi, Yu Narukami, and/♊or Ren Amamiya before Igor, but Igor himself is like the beating heart of the Wild Card.

Igor, his ever-changing Velvet Room, and his lineup of assistants forms a cornerstone of the 𝔍Persona series. If𒁏 he’s not in Persona 6, well, that’d be sad.

Magician: Junpei Iori

The Magician Arcana frequently belongs to one of the protagonist’s closest friends, like Yosuke Hanamura in Persona 4, and Morgana in Persona 5. (There’s also Kenji Tomochika in Persona 3, but uh… yeah.) Persona 3’s other Magician Arcana wielder,🎃 Junpei Iori, is arguably the most likab🐷le of the bunch, and not just because he uses a baseball bat for a weapon in Persona 4 Arena Ultimax.

Laid back but sincere, flirta༺tious but not downright🧸 creepy, Junpei has a good thing going on. His best bit is his story relevance, however; Junpei’s ties to Chidori Yoshino are a well written tragedy.

Priestess: Makoto Niijima

Makoto has the somewhat awkward honor of sharing her forename with Persona 3’s male protagonist, ꧑making her the second playable Makoto in the series. That’s got nothing to do with her being on this list - it’s just a bit amusing is all.

Anyway, it&rs🐻quo;s Makoto’s strong will and dedication that make her stick out so well, fueled by the realization that a life clinging to the rigidity of harsh rules is no life at all as she grows increasingly tangled not just in the lives of the Phantom Thieves, but her sister Sae’s ongoing investigat𝕴ion into them.

Plus, Makoto knows aikido. 🥃Th♍at’s just awesome.

Empress: Mitsuru Kirijo

Wise beyond her years, calm and collected under pressure, and aওt times hilariously out-of-touch with social norms and practices, Mitsuru Kirijo isn’t just one of Persona 3’s coolest and most iconic characters - she also sports one of the best designs in gaming. (Hey, that’s just our opinion, bu🐭t then, isn’t that the case with everything we’ve written here?)

Mitsuru has even more direct ties to Persona 3’s main plot than most of her fellow party members, res𓆉ulting in a fair number of memorably vivid scenes.

Emperor: Yusuke Kitagawa

First impressions of Yusuke are kind of rough. It’s easy to look at his demand that Ann Takamaki model for him in exchange for calling off his threat to contact the police as gross blackmail, and we wouldn’t blame anyone for having a hard time getting past that. But if you can overlook this early (and somewhat explainable) behavior, you’ll find a character not at all ak𓃲in to how he seems in that scene.

Yus♊uke’s obliviousness forms a large portion of Persona 5’s funniest moments, b🐠ut it never dulls him into abject stupidity; he is a master of artistic expression, and his insights can prove singularly clever.

Hierophant: Ryotaro Dojima

This man’s got your back. Ryotaro Dojima, widower and father to young Nanako, is a hard-working detective with a heart of gold. But he’s more than this - he&rsqu🌞o;s believably challenged by a difficult life jug🌄gling a demanding career with the rigors of fatherhood.

We’d go as far as to say Dojima is written better than the vast majority of Persona’s characters, an achievement, indeed, for a series which owes so much of its popularity to its casts. He commands quite a few of the most effective emotional sequences in Persona 4, and we couldn’t🔯 imagine the story without him.

Lovers: Rise Kujikawa

Rise’s not just beloved by so many players; she’s beloved within the story of Persona 4 by thousands of adoring fans. The young idol, increasingly overwhelmed by such a spotlight lifestyle, retreats to the town of Inaba, where her insecurities are💜 soon revealed during her recruitment arc, and her newfound friends subsequently help her to get in touch with her true self.

It’s not so much that Rise (or ‘Risette’ as she’s known in idol culture) is a burgeoning superstar that makes her so interesting - it’s her other side, her quieter, small-town side, and t🌟he need to wrestle between these aspects and the rewards and consequences of choosing one over the other.

Chariot: Ryuji Sakamoto

He may spout the line ‘[insert expletive here] adults’ a few times too many, but Ryuji has his own flavor of charm. There’s a very real reason for all of his aggressive posturing; his childhood’s full of trauma, and his high school life hasn’t been any better by the time he meets Ren Amamiya and gets pulled into Persona 🌺5’s sprawling tale.

Ryuji’s just a nice dude. He’s caring and swee🐷t, no matter his occasional behavior to the contrary. He’s a little dense - OK, a lot dense - but he’s got it where it counts.

Justice: Nanako Dojima

This one was close. Persona 5’s ﷽Goro Akechi is a fascinating character, whether you love him, hat🌠e him, revere him, revile him, or even all of the above. But he’s bested by a six-year-old, because Nanako Dojima is just as precious as her father Ryotaro is haunted, just as adorable as her father is proud, and just as linked to Persona 4’s best moments as her dad.

Hermit: Futaba Sakura

Look, we love how cute Fox is as much as the next person, but Persona 5’s Futaba has this in the bag, right? Cloistered to the point of full-fledged agoraphobia, sheꦡ’s got a past as tragiওc as Ryuji’s and a style all her own. It helps that she’s the daughter of Sojiro Sakura, a man who’s so much better deep down inside than he dares to let anyone see until, well, until they see it.

Futaba's slow but steady emergence from the emotional safety of her bedroom into the frightening yet potentially beautiful world she's seldom seen is a delight. Helping her achieve her goals doesn't override Futaba's individual spark, if that makes sense - a less defined character might have devolved into more of a player's goal than a person.
