Picture this: it's the holiday season of 2020. A pair of hopeful parents are trying to get the newest console for their bright-eyed kid who made the nice list. And that's how many Christmases will be ruined by bad naming conventions. Head of Xbox Phil Spencer tried to explain why Microsoft is putting future parents through this ordeal– th♉e short of it is that they want it to be the best Xbox anyone has ever seen.
Spencer recently went on the Xbox End of the Year podcast to clarify the idea behind Series X. Microsoft's aim is to "make games run better that had been built for one spec of console on a new spec" because console games are usually built for a very specific console. Although this may sound like plain old backwards compatibility, it's actually more: it's not just enough that the games run on the Series X – they also have to run better.
Spencer later explained that the Serieꦆs X is supposed to tie many previous iterations together: "We’re gonna try to make the 360 games run better, the original Xbox One games run better. We 🌺knew we wouldn’t get all of them, but I loved the fact that was part of the journey," he said, later adding, "One of the things we look at with Xbox Series X is that we want this to be the best place to play [...] You're going to have amazing series games that take the full power of Series X, but you're also gonna have some games that were written generations before, and we want those to run incredibly well."
While this explains that the Series X actually does not hint at multiple new consoles under this brand, it also kind of makes sense: it's a place where Xbox meets itself, so to speak. The end game, of course, is to approach something that PC has done for a long time, Spencer admits.
