PlatinumGames is a video game studio known for its beloved signature style that can be identified across its sizable catalog of releases, regardless of IP. Tencent is ♉a Chinese megacorporation with business ventures in practically every industry involving a digital device, including a monolithic gaming division. While in a vacuum, few would have had reason to envision the two companies becoming business partners, they are now just that, as announced in a posted to💃 the PlatinumGames website on January 7th.
According to the post, which is credited to Kenichi Sato, tꦯhe president and CEO of PlatinumGames, the partnership is not expected to change much beyond the studio's potential ability to self-publish. The basis for their alliance is an investment of capital from the Chinese megacorporation. While this does amount to what is likely sizable financial backing, Sato states clearly that PlatinumGames will remain an independent studio and maintain its existing corporate structure, with no alternations made in the wake of the investment.
In addition to the prospect of publishing its own games, Sato states that he envisions♑ the investment bolstering the company's business component as well as providing those at PlatinumGames with a "wider global perspective." These words are followed by a commitment to continue to make games that live up to the standard of quality established by the company, seeming to indicate a refusal to allow whatever influence Tencent may now have to too-heavily dictate creative decisions made by the PlatinumGames team.
Tencent either owns or has a stake in League of Legends, Playerunknown's Battlegrounds, Call of Duty: Mobile, and Fortnite, among plenty of other titles. While in no universe does a company making money from practically every major battle royale game need a stake in yet another video game studio, its stake in PlatinumGames makes sense insofar a🌟s it diversifies the variety of games in which it's invested. Prestige single-player campaigns are a significantly different experience from their existing moneymakers, at least as far as what's popular outside of China.
PlatinumGames' next two planned games are Bayonetta 3 for the Switch and Babylon's Fall for the PS4, release dates for both to be announced. The amount to which this new partnership may or may not influence these and other titles will become clear when more details drop abo🐼ut these and other releases.
