PlatinumGames has developed games for different companies over the years, but it doesn't have complete ownership over any of its franchises. , Nier: Automata and The Wonderful 101 are all owned by companies other than PlatinumGames. As such, PlatinumG🌞ames is moving into self-publishing its own games, with the help of a sizable investment from Tencent.
The recent Kickstarter for The Wonderful 101: Remastered has led to speculation that PlatinumGames is going to bring back some of its other projects. The one that fans are most interested in is Scalebound, which was originally going to be published by Microsoft Studios and was intended to be released on PC and Xbox One. Scalebound was canceled in 2017, but fans are speculating that PlatinumGames could revive the project through crowd-funding. The question of a Scalebound revival was brought up in an interview with PlatinumGames studio head Atsushi Inaba with (via ), and the main issue with bringing the ga🌞me back is Microsoft, as it owns the I📖P for the game.
"Again, it's a good question! But this was an intellectual property that belongs 100% to Microsoft. Whatever happens with this project, we can't really do anything with it unless Microsoft leaves us. But it's a game that we fall in love with and love. If♒ the opportunity arises, it's something we would love to return to."
The fact that Microsoft owns the Scalebound IP isn't an insurmountable barrier for the franchise to return. PlatinumGames has already worked out a deal with Nintendo in regards to bringing The Wonderful 101: Remastered to Kickstarter for a multi-platform release. The Scalebound license is currently sitting in limbo, so Microsoft might be open to allowing the gam𝓀e to be financed through crowd-funding and brought to different sy❀stems.
The footage of Scalebound that was released made it seem like an awesome game and it was a shame to see it canceled after spending four years in development. The Wonderful 101: Remastered Kickstarter has proven to be a huge success so far and it's possible that the revival of the Wonderful Ones could also prompt the return of Scalebound in the future.
