With the recent release of the new generation of Pokémon games, it's time for new mechanics and dropped mechanics. Gamefreak tries to make each generation their own 🍸through specialty options in those generations that affect how you play the game. Even though this tactic kills any line of progressive improvement by dropping much what is love din that generation for something new, it gives a nostalgia effect to those generations that stand out from the rest.
Generation 3 saw the introduction of which became the best selling games of the Game Boy Advanced. While the core gameplay wasn't changed then it added many features that are long gone today, and some features that would greatly improve Sword and Shield if added in. So here are 10 mechanics missing from modern Pokémon games that were presented in Gen III.
10 ♐ Surf on Pokemon
Even though HMs were a big pain, there was always special connection to basically choosing which Pokémon would get the luxury of holding you up in the air as you cross water. Being the water-centric region the Ruby and Sapphire were, of course, this would be a big part of the game and a big bonding experience for a player and their chosen Pokémon﷽. Now with Sword and SHield you simply ride around a bike across the water, it has a Rotom in it but not of your choice, Rotom is simply there because it's been pushed down your throat since Sun & Moon.
9 ꦍ 🔯 Pokémon Contests
Pokémon Contest gave something different from the norm of battling gyms and a whole new side gaming option for players. It would have been majorl🍰y preferable if Gamefreak would have developed this idea more in games, such as giving the player a path to the end without having to battle gyms or allowing the player to do both to progress tꦆhe story. What fans got instead to break up the gym leader monotony is the Hawaiian version of gym leaders, who make you go do tasks. This would be a great example of trying something completely out of the blue rather while dropping a mechanic they've been developing for years rather than having natural progression.
8 Planting Berries 💜

This had made getting berries more convenient and works well with the cooking system that is heavily reliant on berries, even though the end animation shows a lot of mysterious rice showing up with no berries. This had essentially made picking berries in a game kind of useless being it was one of the only "Real-world clock" based additions of the game that only takes 40 hours to complete.
7 Bike Hopping 🧔
Even though Sword and Shield are hea♋vily bike-reliant to get around, and even encourages you to use the bike through the fast speed mode, but one thing that is missing that would improve players' experiences is simply the ability to make the bike jump. While this would oddly turn Pokémon into a som๊ewhat 3D platformer it could be used sparingly enough to keep things interesting.
6 🌌 Secret Bases 𝓡
One of the best mechanics from Gen III was the secret base maker. One could have hours of fun just making their secret base for other players to explore, or could🌟 make traps to prevent any player from entering their base. Either way this was another option that should have been nurtured rather than dropped on its head.
With the online interactivity possible with modern gaming this option could be fully realized because of the overall possibility to upgrade the freedom this mꦿechanic gives players, from making a Pokémon garden area where you get to see your Pokémon wander around to making mazes to prevent other's from finding it, to having catch the flag missions and spy missions to find other player's bases. Overall, this mechanic was squandered on.
5 ♉ Climbi🍸ng Waterfalls
While the point of waterfall was overall useless, it was epic using it to get to the Pokémon league. Other than that, it was just another animation for Rock Smash essentially where it was just another obstacle to prevent progress. With the current idea of "Open World" Pokémon experiencꦰe that Game Freak seems to be leaning to, Waterfall has outgrown its usefulness as an obstacle, but it would be cool seeing a come back just to use it out in the wild to climb waterfalls on command with your Pokémon.
4 Diving
Diving was another option that could have been extremely well developed if given enough care. Its un-inclusion in following Pokémon games have left a whole in how some Pokémon show up being the point of Dive was to catch deep water Pokꦯémon.
Clampearl is a good example where later entries you could just use a fishing pole to get it, even though you had to dive several hundred feet in the water before to find it which made more sense. It easily could have been developed to have a whole other map to explore in the game with𓆉 very specific Pokémon in it, and e🐻ven places or bases you could visit.
3 Direct Link Trading 🌠
This is one mechanic that is thankfully gone from Pokémon today. This would make getting all the Pokémon expensive if you didn't know someone who had the opposite version of your game, if you could even deal with that person or bargain with them. Online trading has really improved the idea of trading and one mechanic that is don🍰e way better then what Gen III could offer.
2 Random Legendary Encounters 💎
While some modern Pokémon games Like Ultra Sun and Moon like 🐽jut throwing lot's of legendary Pokémon your way with their random encounter portal system, having region-specific Pokémon wandering around the map, against your knowledge, added a sense of excitement and cat and mouse pursuit once you found them for the first time. If you weren't expecting it to show up in the grass suddenly it was the surprise of your life at the time. That is something missing from Sword and Shield that weakens them as Pokémon games, with a limited amount of legendary Pokémon there's a lot less of a goal in the games.
1 💧 Over Level 70 Post Game Battles ♋
While Hop provided for an interesting challenge post-game, nothing in Sword and Shield comes close to the Steven battle or the 2nd Pokémon League battle in Leafgreen and Firered. Those were extreme fights in their own right and some of the hardest challengesꦅ in Pokémon. It gave player's something to aim and train for after they completed the main game. Unfortunately, what's there in Sword and Shield doesn't cover it which is unfortunate because it 🍒limits how long someone can enjoy the game for.
