Introduced in Generation Three, abilities have become a staple of the Pokemon series, giving Pokemon extra capabilities in battle. Some abilities result in increased power, some provide boosts to allies on the field or others in the party, and others provide conveniences to make players' lives easier.
What few players know, however, is that some abilities come with bonus effects. These abilities do more than just provide their boosts in battle, giving bonuses outside of fights to give players more control over things like wild encounters or egg hatching. These extra perks can be incredibly useful, so here are ten abilities you didn't know had secondary effects.
10 🃏 Sheer Force Makes Pokemon Immune To The Life Orb
Sheer Force powers up moves with secondary effects, with the only drawback being that the chance of those secondary effects occurring is removed. This is a great ability for the Pokemon who get it, as the poweಞr boost is considerable, and can prove a seriously useful asset.
What Sheer Force also does for those secondary-effect moves, is negate the damage taken by the Life Orb. The damage boost the Life Orb gives remains, meaning your moves are boosted 30 percent by Sheer Force and another 30 percent by the life Orb, but you won't take the 10 percent HP damage the Orb ordinarily causes - a fantastic perk.
9 ꦇ Hyper🐭 Cutter Buffs Your Grass Mowing
It's a little known fact that prior to Generation Four, using Cut when in tall grass would cut the grass immediately around the player, creating a grass-free area with a radius of one tile. Hyper Cutter's main function is to prevent other Pokemon from lowering your attack stat, but it also allows Pokemon with the ability to mow grass with a radius of two instead of the usual one. Is this𝐆 the most useless effect of an ability in Pokemon history? Quite possibly.
8 No Guard Doubles Encounter Rate 𝓰
No Guard ensures the Pokemon with the ability never miss in battle, with the tradeoff being that your opponents will also never miss. Outside of battle, though, if a Pokemon with No Guard is in the front of your party, the rate at which you encounter wild Pokemon will double.

5 💙 🎐 Intimidate Can Scare Off Wild Encounters
Intimidate is a very well-known and powerfu⛄l ability, lowering the opponent's attack stat as soon as the Intimidate Pokemon enters battle. Getting an early attack drop like this without having to use a turn is incredibly helpful, so it's no wonder Intimidate is so popular.
Intimidate's other function is far less known, however. Contrary to Magnet Pull and its equivalents for other types, Intimidate can decrease wild encounters; specifically, an Intimidate Pokemon at the front of the party prevents 50 percent of wild encounters with Pokemon five levels (or more) lower than itself.
4 🐠 Hustle Ca🧸n Max The Level Of Wild Encounters
As with many abilities' overworld functions, Hustle is concerned with influencing wild encounters. With a Hustle Pokemon in the first slot of the party, there's a 50 percent chance that any wild encounter will be the highest possible level they can be for that area.
Getting the upper bound of the level range is nice, since it reduces the grinding needed to level the Pokemon you caught. Hustle's in-battle use is helpful too - it buffs attack by 50 percent at the cost of a small accuracy drop - so it's a great ability to have.
3 ꦑ Sticky Hold Makes Fishing Easier
Yet another favorite of shiny hunters due to its uses for chain fishing, Sticky Hold's extra effect is that it increases the chances of getting a bite while fishing. This effect is shared with Suction Cups, and it's a very convenient one given how annoying fishing can be.
In battle, Sticky Hold prevents held items from being taken or knocked off by a multitude of moves, so while it's not the most powerful of abilities, it's a nice bonus. The real value is in the overworld use though, so if you do a lot of fishing, be sure to catch a Sticky Hold Pokemon.
2 Synchronize Can Force Wild Pokemon's Natures
Prior to Generation Eight, a Pokemon with Synchronize at the front of the party had a 50 percent chance of causing wild Pokemon to have the same nature as itself. If you had a Synchronize 'mon with a good nature, this could be seriously helpful for getting new Pokemon with desirable natures - an otherwise time-consuming and grindy task.
Synchronize was then made even better in Sword and Shield, with the chance buffed to 100 percent. It's a top-tier ability on this alone, but it's handy when battling too - when a Synchronize Pokemon is inflicted with a status condition like poison or paralysis, it'll give that effect to the foe as well.
1 Cute Charm Can Influence The Gender 🌌Of Encounters ♎
In battle, Cute Charm operates like Flame Body in that it activates on contact. When an enemy Pokemon makes contact, there's a chance they'll become infatuated, which can subsequently immobilize them - not something to be sniffed at.
Outside of battle, Cute Charm is another ability relying on a Pokemon with it at the front of the party. In this case, wild Pokemon will have a 66.7 percent chance to be the opposite gender to the Cute Charm Pokemon. This might seem niche, but it's invaluable for those seeking Vespiequens or Salazzles, and can be seriously helpful for getting 'mons for breeding too. making Cute Charm a helpful ability indeed.
