Pokemon has an excellent sense of humor. Team Rocket uses puns so much that puns are sewn into the identity of this series. There are so many good Pokemon names with interesting etymologies that show a commitmen෴t to design and, most importantly, to the jokes themselves. What started as an endearing feature of Generation 1, has thankfully carried on to this day. Some of these Pokemon names are well-known, some might be new, but all of them are puns worth a lꦑaugh.

Updated on April 12, 2022 by Quinton O'Connor: As of this writing, there are over 900 different species of Pokemon. These little rascals frequently get their names from some fiendishly punny one-two combo. In light of so many critters, could we truly leave this list at just ten nominees? No! In the interest of full disclosure, the need to explore greater frontiers, we have upped this article to 15. We hope you'll dig reading it as much we dug writing it.

15 Mimikyu

Mimikyu's name is just perfect. Like Ditto, its name solidifies its identity. The etymology is simple: it's an alternate spelling of the words "mimic" and "you." It also rhymes with Pikachu, which is significant because Pikachu is the little Fairy Pokemon's hero. Mimikyu is believed to be so hideous, that it wears a Pikachu disguise in order to find affection, and to one day reach the popularity of the series mascot. Because of its sad backstory and its wonderful name, Mimikyu has earned the hearts of many fans.

14 Sinisteaꦦ and Polteageist

Sinistea and Polteageist were recently introduced in Pokemon Sword & Shield. Polteageist is a clever pun on the word "poltergeist," while Sinistea is a pun on the word "sinister." Both Pokemon are known as the black tea Pokemon, as they are spirits composed entirely of black tea. These Pokemon are even so choosy as to inhabit priceless authentic teacups over phony ones when they get the chance. When these ghosts try to absorb the lifeforce by getting drank, they do it in style. What's not to love about these adorable tea specters?

13 Buzzwole

Buzzwole was made for this generation. It's a jacked interdimensional mosquito with a body like John Cena's. Its existence also answers the question, what would a mosquito on steroids look like? Because that has to have been someone's question, at some point, right? There are so many people on this planet, you know? The "buzz" in Buzzwole refers to the creature's Bug-typing, while the "zwole" refers to "swole" a slang term that means buff or muscular.

As the anime shows, Buzzwole can make short work of a team of Machamps, and make a Bewear flee in terror. Buzzwole strikes body-building poses all the time. Everything about this Ultra Beast is over the top and𒊎 ridiculous.

12 Koffing and Weezing ꧟

Koffing and its evolution Weezing are two classic Pokemon with wonderful top-down designs. Both Pokemon produce suffocating toxic gases. The joke is Koffing's gases make its foes cough, while the stronger Weezing's gases are so bad that its foes start wheezing. No doubt these jokes were aimed at the Western audiences, and are still effective almost 25 years later. Since they were the first Poison-types, the puns had to be obvious enough to introduce this typing to the world.

11 Sudowoodo

Sudowoodo posing by a mountain cliff in the Pokemon anime

Initially, Sudowoodo's name just seems fun to say, but it's actually an ingenious pun. Phonetically, "Sudo" and "pseudo," as in fake or imitation, are the same. "Woodo" similarly refers to wood or tree. Literally, Sudowoodo is pseudo wood, and the games further confirm this. Sudowoodo's first appearance is in Pokemon Gold & Silver as a tree-shaped roadblock. After being sprayed with a Squirtbottle, it wakes up and reveals itself as the lovable tree mimic. Its designer Ken Sugimori clearly has a great sense of humor.

10 Octillery

"Unleash the octillery!" sounds like the type of order an Atlantean commander might yell at their troops. Octillery is a po📖rtmanteau of "octopus" and "artillꦯery," or simply a pun on artillery. Its mouth is shaped like a turret and its tentacles have suction cups to stabilize it when firing. Octillery has a unique move-set from leveling up: it learns all the Beam moves, so it lives up to its title as the Jet Pokemon. Octillery has a perfect top-down design for a Water-type and like many Pokemon names, is fun to say.

9 Empoleon

Empoleon's name is a portmanteau of "emperor penguin" and "Napoleon." Deriving inspiration from famous people is nothing new, but the French revolutionary was a perfect choice.

It is full of pride, just like Napoleon, and will use its steel wings to slash whoever offends it. With the double meaning of emperor, referring to Napoleon's self-appointed title, and emperor penguin, this joke works on so many levels.

8 Gastly

Gastly is one of the funniest Pokemon names. Gastly is a floating ball of poisonous gas with evil eyes and a fanged mouth. It's also a Ghost-type and a truly ghastly apparition. To be honest, even a child could figure this one out, but puns rarely require complexity to be good. As the very first Ghost-types of the series, Gastly and its counterparts launched this concept in꧅to the series, and catchy names like these were essential for sticking the landi꧂ng.

7 𒐪 ꦑ Roggenrola

Get ready to Roggenrola! This ingenious name is a pun on "rock n' roll." It sounds like something a washed-up rock-star-turned-Pokemon-geologist came up with while spelunking in Wellspring Cave. Roggenrola is a small Rock-type Pokémon with a geode for a head and two stumpy feet. According to Bulbapedia, some bowlers in Unova actually use Roggenrola as bowling balls. Its name isn't just a joke, Roggenrola can actually roll; whether it can help roll a perfect game is another question.

6 👍𒊎 Perrserker

What happens when you give Meowth a beard, blades on its paws,💞 and a furry helmet? Perrserker: a Pokemon whose name was so "punnily" obvious, they had to alter the spellin🐎g.

Perrserker is a combination of "purr" and "berserker," which is the name for an elite Viking warrior that would charge into battle with nothing more than an animal pelt. Perrserker's fur is thick as armor, and it's highly aggressive. It's a miniature Viking cat, making its very existence a joke.
