This is part five of our official Pokemon Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl complete guide and walkthrough, which picks up right after defeating Commander Mars in Valley Windworks. Now you need to head through Eterna Forest in order to reach Eterna City and earn the Forest Badge from Gardenia.
Once you leave Valley Windworks, your next point of call is to head up Route 205, which was previously blocked off by a couple of Team Galactic grunts. This is a long route, but it’s also a very straightforward one. Battle all the trainers you see and be sure to make use of the healing house situated around halfway up the route. Once you’ve topped up your party’s HP, continue north until you reach Eterna Forest. Yes, you need to go inside - this is a Pokemon game we’re talking about.
As soon as you enter Eterna Forest, a trainer called Cheryl will approach you and propose that you make your way through it together. As a result of this, every battle here - including wild encounters - is actually a double battle in which your team consists of the first Pokemon in your party and Cheryl’s Chansey. Nuzlockers rejoice, Cheryl will also heal your Pokemon after each and every throwdown. Her Chansey may not pack much of a punch, but it will save you a fortune on Potions and Antidotes - and, again, probably multiple of your Pokemon&rsq♏uo;s lives in a Nuzlocke.
The way through Eterna Forest is pretty well signposted, so it’s unlikely you’ll get lost here. Personally, I don’t think there’s much worth catching unless you know how to use Lopunny and are willing to raise a Buneary or you missed out on Budew earlier on. If neither of those options apply to you, it’s easi⛦er to just move on - at least until later when Rotom becomes available.
Onc🦋e you’re out of the woods (eh? eh?) you’ll reach the final stretch of Route 205, which is about a stone’s throw away from Eterna City. If you head north towards the great big building in the top left corner of the city, you’ll bump into Cynthia, who will generously gift you with the HM for Cut. The thing is, you can’t use it yet - first, you need to take on Gardenia.
Eterna City’s gym is one of Gen 4’s most manageable challenges, largely because Chimchar counters it and anyone who chose Turtwig or Piplup can easily sweep Gardenia’s entire squadജ with a decently leveled Staravia. What makes this gym a🎶 pain is that you can’t actually challenge Gardenia until you find all four of the trainers lurking about the trees.
Since we're lovely people here at TheGamer, we've taken the liberty of screenshotting the locations for all four trainers in Gardenia's gym. It's worth noting that you need to battle them in order, so start with the one at the top.
Once you've battled all four trainers, it's time to take on Gardenia herself. Aside from her Roserade - which is level 22 and packs a serious punch with Magical Leaf - her team is pretty flimsy. We'd recommend training your Monferno or Staravia to at least level 24 before the fight so they can easily beat it with STAB Flame Wheel or Wing Attack.
After you've done all of the above, head up to the Underground Man’s house, which is dead near the Pokemon Centre and clearly signposted. Once you have a brief chat with him, he'll give you an Explorer Kit that allows you to burrow down to the all-new Grand Underground, a sprawling online area filled with treasure and rare Pokemon. The treasure isn’t of huge importance this early in the game, but you can exploit the system by catching high-leveled ‘mons that can easily incapacitate the next few gym leaders on the trot all by their lonesome.
