This is part 20 of our official Pokemon Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl complete guide and walkthrough, which picks up right after you make your way through Victory Road and finally reach the Pokemon League. Before you can take on the Elite Four though, there's something else you need to take care of: the final rival battle.

Right, so your Pokemon are all heal𝓡ed up and you’ve bought all the items you need - what now? Well, as you can probably guess from the paragraph above, it’s time for one last hurrah against your rival. As soon as you talk to the Pokemon League officiator directly in front of the entrance, your pal from Twinleaf will THUD! into you one final time, demanding the ultimate battle before you go on tꦦo face the Elite Four.

The thing about this battle is that it varies pretty wildly depending on who you chose aওs your starter all those years ago. Here are the three possible ൲teams you can come up against.

If you chose Turtwig

  • Staraptor level 49
  • Heracross level 51
  • Snorlax level 52
  • Floatzel level 49
  • Roserade level 49
  • Infernape level 55

If you chose Chimchar

  • Staraptor level 49
  • Heracross level 51
  • Snorlax level 52
  • Rapidash level 49
  • Roserade level 49
  • Empoleon level 55

If you chose Piplup

  • Staraptor level 49
  • Heracross level 51
  • Snorlax level 52
  • Floatzel level 49
  • Rapidash level 49
  • Torterra level 55

As you can see, there are a few permutations here. While this sentiment extended to previous battles in the game - that your rival has the starter with a type advantage over yours as well as the two of either Floatzel, Rapidash, or Roserade that don’t share a type with their starter - they’re all pretty high-leveled now. What’s more, Staraptor, Heracross, and Snorlax aren’t ‘mons you should d✃iscount.

Let’s start with those♚ three, given that they’re consistent across all three battles. For Staraptor, you’ll want a Pokemon with either STAB Rock moves or STAB Electric moves. I personally tend to use Luxray to fill this spot, but Electivire, Magnezone, and Rhyperior are all also great picks.

luxray

For Snorlax, you want Fighting moves. If you chose Infernape, you’re in luck - STAB Close Combat will allow you to take🌞 out Snorlax in one hit. Staraptor can also do a lot of damage with Close Combat, while Gallade and Toxicroak make for decent alternatives. Unfortunately, Lucario isn’t a very good pick here on account of the fact that it’s a Pokemon designed for Special Attack - in case you didn’t know, Sno꧒rlax’s Special Defense stat clocks in at a whopping 110.

Lastly, Heracross has a 4x weakness to🉐 Fly🐎ing-type moves, meaning Staraptor’s Fly or Brave Bird are the Beedrill’s kneedrills here. Given that Staraptor is also a good choice against Snorlax - and a great counter for Roserade if you picked Turtwig or Chimchar - it really should be a must-pick on your Pokemon League team.

And now we get down to the nitty gritty. To be completely honest, the three rotating Pokemon in your rival’s team are arguably the best picks for countering their starter. If they have Torterra, you want Rapidash or a Fire-type Pokemon from the Grand Underground’s new Hideaways - although you'll need to watch out for EQ. If they have Empoleon, Roserade isn’t necessarily the best pick given its dual Steel typing, but… do you know what? Staraptor is great against Empoleon too! If they have Infernape. Floatzel should be able to one-shot them with a STAB Water attack. Gyarados, Garchomp, and - you guessed it! - Staraptor are also hard counters.

The only remaining thing here is figuring out how to take out their two rotating Pokemon. The thing is… we’ve kind of already done that, right? They’re bound to the same typings as Gen 4’🌠s starter trio, meaning that if you’re able to counter Grass, Water, and Fire - which you already should be given all of the advice above - all you need to do is manage your switch-ins properly to take out whatever two Pokemon your rival decides to run.

Provided you’ve taken all of the above infoℱrmation into account, the last fight against your rival should be a walk in Pal Park. Remember, though - this is just the appetizer. The main course lies right behind that door you just got THUD!ed out🌠.
