Pokémon Championships have been canceled in Hong Kong 🃏as the coronavirus continues to spreadౠ and officials attempt to contain it.

The popularity of esports is on the rise. Turns out people enjoy watching professionals play their favorite games almost as much as they love to play the games themselves. Getting a glimpse of exactly how g♑ood someone is at a game you love can be very interesting, if not a little demoralizing when you realize you're not actually that good at the✱ game after all.

Esports has a couple of benefits over regular sports. They almost exclusively take place indoors, and there's very little chance of its competitors getting hurt or injured. That means tournaments are rarely canceled and competitors don't often have to pull out. However, some extenuating circumstances in Hong Kong and China have warranted the cancellation of a Pokémon tournament.

If you've not guessed by now, we're referring to the outbreak of the coronavirus in China. As the virus has continued to spread, the VGC2020 Midseason Showdowns#2 (Winter Series) Pokémon championships have been canceled, reports . The first showdown has already taken place, with the next scheduled to go down on February 2ᩚᩚᩚᩚᩚᩚ⁤⁤⁤⁤ᩚ⁤⁤⁤⁤ᩚ⁤⁤⁤⁤ᩚ𒀱ᩚᩚᩚ, 2020. At the ti🌳me of typing this, the third showdown is still going ahead on February 9, 2020.

The cancellation of the event comes in the wake of Hong Kong upping its response level to the outbreak to "emergency."  reports that 132 people have died from t✤he virus so far, with another 6000 thought to be infected. Everythi𓃲ng and anything is being done to prevent the virus from spreading any further than it already has, including people from other countries having to stay put for longer than they expected.

As frustrating as the Pokémon championships' cancellation will be for those who planned to take part, and others who were going to watch, it's a small price to pay when looking at the bigger picture. With the coronavirus spreading in the way that it has done thus far, any opportunity to 🎶prevent large groups of people from gathering tog💞ether in one place is one that has to be taken.
