Pokémon has been going strong for over two decades now with no signs of slowing down. At that same time, monster-catching games are still cropping up as well, which got us thinking. Compared to the eigh Pokémon generations, how do they stack up to eight of🦩 the best games with similar mechanics (or copycats) out ther💫e?
We tried to rank them all in what we think is a definitive list of monster-catching RPGs that all Pokémon fans will like. Who will rise to the top? Is it a Pokémon game or one of the other titles? R♛ead on toꩵ find out!
16 Monster Hunter Stories ཧ
Monster Hunter Stories was a nice distraction to get other players afraid of the main series into the fray. Players can hatch Monsties and take them into battle. They act on their own, which is why this game isn’t the best example of a Pokémon-l⛦ikꦑe experience. That said it is still worth a look for those with a Nintendo 3DS.
15 Poké⭕mon Ruby/Sapphire 🔴
Pokémon Gold/Silver was the exact kind of sequel fans never knew they wanted. To then go from those two to Ruby and Sapphire was a letdown. Tꦚhey were the worse the main series ever got. It’s not awful as it is still Pokémon, which are all good to a po🅰int. It was more like a disappointment.
14 🏅 Yo-kai Watch
Yo-kai Watch is a direct attack on Pokémon. Instead of monsters, players collect ghosts in various forms. In the sequels, it even g𒉰ot split intꦡo two versions.
It’s good if not a little too easy even by Pokémon standards. Plus, Yo-kai Watch also has one’s party members𒀰 auto-battle with little input except♕ for specials.
13 🧔 Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker 🍬
Dragon Quest V is the first game in the series to add a monster-catching element, which was four years before Pokémon. Once Pokémon got big, Enix made the Dragon Quest Monsters spin-off and Joker is a spin-off of that.
Among them all, this is the better seri🎶es. It’s less about saving the world and more about grinding hours away on captured monsters.
12 Pokémon Sun/Moon 𒆙 🅺
Pokémon Sun/Moon is the second “worst” generation in the series. We applaud it for trying something new like changing gym battles to challenges an creating new versions of classic Pokémon. Turning Exeggutor into a palm tree was also a nea𒐪t idea,❀ but something behind the whole thing just made the games feel soulless.
11 🍸 Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth
As the two biggest monster-catching franchises, there are good sides to both Digimon and Pokémon. On the𝔍 bad side, the games have been pretty poor up until this game.
It combined the aspects of monster catching and mashed it up with a detective story set in a digital world akin to .Hack. It was a game made for us.
10 ꧙Pokémon Dia💞mond/Pearl
After the Game Boy Advance adventures, Pokémon Diamond/Pearl was a step up. It still lacked the wow factor of Pokémon Gold/Silver, but everything about this experi💞ence - from the speed of the game to the DS’ capability to trade wirelessly - was more refined. This was a step in the right direction.
9 Kingdom🧸 Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance
Kingdom Hearts 3D was set in a dream world where Sora and Riku acquired the assistance of Dream Eater Spirits. These⛄ little critters took the place of party members like Dona𝐆ld and Goofy.
They were not caught so much as they were created via an alchemy-like system. Cute, colorful, and a lot of fun to play around with, Dream Eater Spirits were a nice addition to Kingdom Hearts' typical hack and slash combat.
8 Pokémon Sword/Shield ꦬ
At long last, 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:Pokémon Sword/Shield launched as a real Pokémon experience for consoles. This is what fans wanted, right? Well, expectations were a bit higher as it was hoped to be more open-world akin to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.
Parts of the campaign are, but Pokémon Sword and Shield were not what people expected. Plus, there was the whole 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:Pokédex situation. B𓃲eneath it all is a strong game, but one not so innovative.
7 World of Final Fantasy 𓆏
The twin heroes look like they were ripped out of 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:Kingdom Hearts. Visually and thematically, that’s what World of Final Fantasy can be likened to, as it places two heroes into a crossover world filled with classic Final Fantasy characters.
Oh right, and battl🦄es are primaril💜y fought with caught monsters one can stack on the protagonists' heads. It is incredibly adorable.
