Fantina is phonetically derived from the word phantom in English, although it could also allude to tango fantasia, a subgenre of the tango dance. Both names would make sense with Fantina's depiction as a Ghost-type user and a skilled dancer.

In German, her name is Lamina, which comes from Lamia, a child-eating monster and night-haunting spirit in Greek mythology. Lamia is used today as somewhat of a bogeyman in Greece to make children behave in fear she might eat them. In Japanese, Fantina's name is Melissa, which is a common western name that would essentially reinforce her status as a foreigner in Japan.
