In games, the final Gym Leader can end a player's journey with a weak fizzle or a big bang. Volkner, "The Shining, Shocking Star," is an example of the latter. An Electric-type specialist, Volkner is one of the most popular Gym Leaders from the Sinnoh games, as well as one of the strongest. The Leader of Sunyshore Gym, Volkner distributes the Beacon Badge to players who can somehow defeat him.

When players first try to enter Sunyshore City, it is explained that Volkner is depressed due to the lack of worthy challengers, and as a result began maki𝓰ng major renovations to the Sunyshore Gym out of sheer boredom. These renovations took up so much electricity a𓃲nd caused a city-wide blackout, only further adding to his dismay. In the games, the need for Volkner to be reinvigorated by a battle makes him a unique character that alludes to having his own ambitions.

10 Volkner's Voice Actors

Like all Pokemon NPCs, Volkner does not have any voiced lines in the core series games, though he can be heard in other Pokemon media. In the anime, Eli James voices Volkner, who was the first character James voiced in the show. James went on to provide the voice of Colress during the show's Unova arc and Siebold in the show's Kalos arc.

In Pokemon Masters, Volkner's voice is provided by Chris Hackney, who has notably portrayed Dimitri in 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:Fire Emblem: Three Houses. Hackney also has an impressive career in anime dubbing, appearing in shows such as One Punch Man and JoJo's Bizarre Adventure.

9 Volkner's Signature Pokemon Is Unclear

Similar to Gym Leader Candice's situation, Volkner's signature Pokemon varies in between his appearances. In Diamond & Pearl, Volkner's ace Pokemon is Luxray, while in Platinum, it's Electivire. Volkner does not own an Electivire in Diamond & Pearl and keeps Luxray on his team in Platinum. In Pokemon Black 2 & White 2, Volkner's signature Pokemon is Electivire in the Pokemon World Tournament.

Yet, in Pokemon Masters, Volkner forms a sync pair with Luxray. This makes it unclear which Pokemon he prefers between the two, though in Platinum he says he couldn't imagine his team without Electivire.

8 Volkner I﷽s Close With Elite Four Flint 💝

Player rival Flint & Volkner double battle in Pokemon Platinum

Before challenging the Leader in Pokemon Platinum, the player is greeted by Elite Four Flint the very moment they enter Sunyshore City for the first time. Fl🐬int tells them😼 that his friend Volkner has been depressed since the blackout since there has been a lack of strong trainers to battle him.

When challenging Flint himself later on, he congratulates the player for managing to spark a fire in Volkner again. In Platinum, the two actually team up to challenge the player and their rival in a Double Battle at the Fight Area. Being Electric- and Fire-type specialists, most of their Pokemon are extremely vulnerable to 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:Earthquake and other Ground-type movꦕes.

7 Volkner's Name Origins

Volkner's English name is clearly derived from the word volt, a reference to his Electric-type specialty. In Japanese, Volkner's name is Denzi, derived from the word denji for electromagnetism.

His name in Spanish is Lectro, from the Spanish word for electric, eléctrico. In Korean, Volkner's name Jeonjin incorporates two words; jeon, meaning electricity or lighting, and jin, meaning thunder. Volkner's name in the Italian-language versions of the games is Corrado, derived from corrente, the Italian word ⛄for current (as in an electric current).

6 Volkner's Odd Connections With Jasmine

Volkner original appearance and Jasmine in the Pokemon Sinnoh anime

Ahead of the release of Pokemon HeartGold & SoulSilver, Johto Gym Leader Jasmine made a cameo in Diamond, Pearl & Platinum in Sunyshore City, where she waits on the beach staring out at the ocean. She and Volkner share many similarities, including the fact that both of them are Gym Leaders in cities with lighthouses in them (the Glitter and Vista Lighthouses).

Both of them are also encountered in those Lighthouses the first time the player meets them, and something gets in the way of them battling right away. In Jasmine's case, Amphy is ill, while in Volkner's case... heᩚᩚᩚᩚᩚᩚ⁤⁤⁤⁤ᩚ⁤⁤⁤⁤ᩚ⁤⁤⁤⁤ᩚ𒀱ᩚᩚᩚ caused a💝 city-wide blackout because he was depressed.

5 Volkner's Weird Diamond & Pearl Team

Ambipom and Octillery as they appear in Pokemon anime

It's one thing for a Pokemon Gym Leader to use a Pokemon that isn't of their specialty type, but Volkner's Diamond & Pearl team takes that even a step further. In those games, Volkner uses two Pokemon outside of his specialty, something he shares in common with his friend Flint (who uses three).

These Pokemon, Ambipom, and Octillery, use one Electric-type move each; Ambipom uses Shock Wave, and 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:Octillery uses Charge Beam. This team is so weird that the Pokemon anime opted to use Volkner's team from Platinum, which was unprecedented in the show's Sinnoh arc. In Platinum, Ambipom and Octillery are thankfully replaced with Jolteon and Electivire.

4 🐻 Volkner Uses Seals ꦜ

Volkner's Electivire using seals in Pokemon Platinum rematch battle

Volkner is the only Sinnoh Gym Leader 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:to use seals; attachments to Poke Balls which create small flourishes when the Pokemon is sent out. In Pokemon Platinum, Volkner's seals are attached to Electivire's Poke Ball, which creates a blue cloud effect when it appears on the battlefield.

This particular seal is Fire Se♍al D, which has variations that are available on different days of the week at the Sunyshore market; Type A is available on Monday, Type B on Tuesday, Type C on Wednesday, and Type D on Thursday. Flint uses Fire Seal B with Magmortar, which creates a cloud of red flames. In the Double Battle with Flint, it is possible for Electivire and Magmortar to be sent out at the same time, creating a sparky and fiery image with their seals.

3 Volkner Challenged The Unova Pokemon League 𓂃

Elite Four Shauntal referencing Volkner in Pokemon Black & White

Challenging the Elite Four is typically only available to Trainers who collect Gym Badges, not the Gym Leaders themselves. In the Sinnoh games, Volkner threatens to challenge the Pokemon League himself if the player isn't able to beat him. Though this never happened canonically, it's implied in Pokemon Black & White that he may have challenged the Unova Pokemon League.

This is revealed through the dialogue of Elite Four Shauntal, who recites a passage from her book: "Do you know Thunderbolt?" was his first greeting to me. It wasn't until after we battled that I learned his name was Volkner.

2 Volkner Returned To The Anime 💝

Pokemon Journeys World Coronation Series Ultra Class

After 11 years and 517 episodes of absence from the Pokemon anime, Volkner returned for a multi-episode stint in Pokemon Journeys: The Series, the current arc of the show which is mostly set in Galar. While characters returning after multiple years is not unheard of for the show, it is typically reserved for characters that were part of the original cast.

Volkner's original voice actor, Hirofumi Nojima, returned to voice the character when the episode aired in Japan on August 20, 2021. It has not yet been confirmed if Eli James will reprise his role for the English dub. In the episode, Ash and Goh return to Sunyshore City in Sinnoh, where Volkner is revealed to be a participant in the World Coronation Series.

1 Volkner's Special Tournament

Volkner appearing in Pokemon Black 2 & White 2 and Eelektross and Galvantula

Similar to fellow 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:Sinnoh Gym Leader Fantina, Volkner appears in a special Download tournament in Pokemon Black 2 & White 2. The tournament was only available in Japan starting on July 14, 2012, and in Korea starting on November 29, 2012. The Gathered! Gym Leader! Tournament features one Gym Leader each from the first four generations of Pokemon; Misty, Jasmine, Norman, and Volkner.

Each participant uses their signature Pokemon (in Volkner's case, Electivire) as well as three other Pokemon that are native to Unova. Volkner's Pokemon in this tournament include the pure Electric-types Eelektross and Zebstrika and the Bug/Electric-type Galvantula. Oddly, Gym Leader Misty is programmed to always reach the final round of this tournament, making it impossible for Volkner to win.
