From the very moment it is born to the very end of its life, Komala is locked in a deep, perpetual sleep. According to the Dex, the leaves that Komala like to eat contain sedative properties, which is what has caused their species' permanent comatose state. While a Komala can still move around, eat, and defend itself, it's not actually reacting to the real world, but merely tossing, turning, and thrashing in response to its endless dreams. It can grow to trust its Trainer, but due to its sleep, it will never know its Trainer's actual face.

Espurr almost never changes the expression on its face. While this may seem cute and meme-worthy on the outside, on the inside, that blank stare belies an intense, near-constant mental effort.
