Fans ate up the new region rabidly, desperate for any new content after Gen I's massive success.
Man⛄y still consider Johto♋ to be one of the best regions, and it definitely is. But, it isn't without some flaws. Like any region, Johto isn't perfect, despite the many great things about it. Here are some of the best and worst things about Johto.
10 ♐ Needs Improvement: Useless🐼 Professor
Every region has a resident professor who studies certain aspects of the Pokémon world and introduces the player to the game. They are often tasked with introducing mechanics,ಌ granting the player a starter Pokémon, and many other roles to help you along.
Johto's professor, Professor Elm, is a bit of a bland one among his colleagues from other regions. It seems he's relatively boring and unhelpful, and💯 the games actually have Professor Oak doing much of what one would expect from Elm.
9 🌱 Pretty Great: Gym Leaders Have ☂Personality
While Professor Elm is a bit bland, the gym leaders of Johto are quite the opposite. Each of them is filled with personality and leaves a꧃ lasting impression on the player, unlike some of the more nondescript leaders from other regions, (yeไs, even Kanto).

8 Needs Improvement: Le🅘ans on Kanto
An age-old criticism of Johto is also one that will never die. Johto has long been said to be 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:a bit reliant on Kanto. Initially, the two were connected and both playable in the Generation II games✤, and fans loved the fact that you could visit both in one game.
However, Johto leans on Kanto a bit too much. It lives in its shadow as the original, more exciting region, a🃏nd much of what people love about the Gen II games is the ability to visit Kanto. Some even go as far as to say Johto is just an added expansion to Kanto and not really its own region.
7 ও ไ Pretty Great: National Park
Rather than adding a new Safari Zone like the one in Fuchsia City in Kanto, Johto opts for a different area altogether: the National Park. While it would definitely be expanded much further if it were to made nowadays, the National Park168澳洲幸运5开奖网: was a really cool area with a lot going for it.
The place felt like a real community hub, 💖with people milling about, hanging out together, and catching Pokémon. The overall appearance and vibe of it are just cozy and really 𝓰cool.
6 Needs Improvement: Pokéꦯmon Distribution
Some decisions by the makers of the Pokémon games go down in infamy as completely nonsensical, leaving fans scratching their heads for years to come. One of the biggest is 🦩found i♎n the Generation II games.
That question is this: Why are so many cool, new Pokémon from Generation II 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:not found in Johto? Pokémon like Houndour were only found in Kanto, and others like Sneasel or Larvitar can only be caught after defeating the Elite 4. Many Johto gym leaders don't even use Johto Pokémon despite obvious choices existing. Morty, for example, is a Ghost-type expert but doesn't have the only Johto Ghost-type, Misdreavus, on his tea🅘m.
5 Pretty Great:ꦐ Mt. Silver
While it sucked t꧑hat many Pokémon were only found in the po🍌st-game, said post-game content is actually pretty great. Being able to venture through Kanto and collect another eight gym badges is great, but the real shining star of the post-game is Mt. Silver.
This large, cave-filled mountain is only for the most experienced trainers, requiring sixteen gym badges to enter. It's filled with high-level Pokémon and other challenges, most notably Red, the origin🐠al player character from Gen I. This ba𒊎ttle is no joke, and is — to this day — one of the hardest in the series.
4 Needs Improvemꦜent: Level Curve ꦿ
A major issue that many took (and still take) with Johto is its dreadful level curve. After defeating Morty in Ecruteak City, the✱ player is free to head west to Cianwood and Olivine cities or East to Mahogany Town and eventually Blackthorn City.
As a result, the level curve is very flat💖. After Morty's defeat,ಌ the game becomes incredibly easy until the Elite 4. There doesn't seem to be any difficulty past the first few gyms.
3 Pretty Great: Culture 𒊎
Some say that Johto doesn't really have its own personality and is too dependent on Kanto. But, one can't deny that ༺Johto is filled to the brim with unique culture. The traditional Japanese vibe that persists through places like Ecruteak City and Bell Tower is fantastic, and places like Azalea Town and the Ilex Forest have clear, distinct vibes.
Johto feels a lot more urban than Kanto, with many꧒ of the cities around the main center section connected by city routes that lead to Goldenrod.
2 Needs Improvement: No Cohesion 🍌
While the vibe of the various towns and cities is great, and the 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:immediate surroundings of Goldenrod are well-connected, the region overall does lack some cohesion. It seems that many of the outer towns are connected by routes but have large so🔯c♏ial or physical barriers.
Blackthorn is stuck behind a mountainous cliff-face, Cianwood is across the ocean🥀 by itself, and Azalea Town is buried deep in the forest and behind a cave. It seems every Pokémon region is either very cohesive or not very, and un🦄fortunately Johto can sometimes fall into the latter category.
1 Pretty Great: ♎Overall Feel
Despite this, the overall feel of Johto is a great one. The region is well-designed, well-laid out, and just feels homey a𓂃nd cozy. No matter where you go in Johto, you feel connected to and immersed in the game.
Johto's vibe of being part of old Japan works perfectly with the lore contained within the Generation II games. It's a great place to return to time and time again, and never really seems to get old. Ther✤e's culture, mystery (like in the Ruins of Alph), and adventure to be found.
