It's💦 incredible how much progress is made in the world of video games in a mere decade. It was only around ten years between the release of Pokémon Gold & Silver and their remakes, Pokémon HeartGold & SoulSilver. Yet, it seems like more than a decade of progress🐻 was made between them.
The world of Pokémon was a very different place between Gen II and Gen IV, and as a result, the Johto region looks different as well. Sure, the same main areas are all there, but they look vastly different. On top of this, plenty was changed t🉐o fit modern times.
Here's a look at all the things that changed abꦉout the Johto region. This list does not include gameplay mechanics, only changes to the region itself.
12 New Pokémon ᩚᩚᩚᩚᩚᩚಞᩚᩚᩚ𒀱ᩚᩚᩚ
Several changes were made to Pokémon themselves, including how they function on the overworld map. Namely, Pokémon are 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:now able to follow behind the player, no matter how large orꦜ intimidating they might be.
The Pokémon following behind will interact with the overworld in certaiꦫn instances, and lar𒅌ger Pokémon will be sent back into their Poké Ball in certain areas because they are too big. The overworld is now programmed in many places to allow Pokémon to respond to situations, such as Grass-types being unhappy in icy or cold areas.
11 New Areas: Sinjoh▨ Ruins
A few new areas were added to Johto for a variety of reasons. 🍒One of the most notable is the Sinjoh Ruins — a clear play on the ꧂names Sinnoh and Johto — located near the Ruins of Alph.
This area can only be accessed if the player is in possession of an event distribution Arceus. It is used to encounter Dialga, Palkia, or Giratina. Notably, the area is not technically part o🐬f Johto, as it lies somewhere to the north of Blackthorn Cit💃y.
10 New A🍃reas: Routes 47 and 48
A much larger and more important area that was added to the Johto region lies west of Cianwood City. This area contains Route 47, Route 48, the Cliff Cave, and168澳洲幸运5开奖网: the Safari Zone — all of which were added in the remakes a✱nd didn't exist in Generation II.
It al𝓀so includes the Embedded Tower, a place where the Hoenn Legendaries Groudon, Kyogre, and Rayquaza can be caught under certain circum🌳stances.
9 ꧂ Small Area Changes
In addition to completely new areas, small changes were made to a ton of existing ones. Some notable examples include visible raised train tracks for the Magnet Train over Goldenr𝓀od City and Route 32.
Professor Elm's lab received a se𝔍cond floor, while the Glitter Lighthouse and Goldenrod Radio Tower both now have balconies.
New Bark💫 Town is now home to large Wind Turbines, while Bell Tower was renamed from the Tin Tower. Mt. Silver received a sigꩵnificant redesign, and certain areas now have walls that can be scaled with the HM for Rock Climb, which is also new to the Johto region.
Several other small tweaks were made to some areas, like ladders being moved slightly or trainers being in different locations. While this list is not about Kanto, it's worth noting that there were 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:many changes to areas in Kanto in HeartGold & SoulSilver, most 🦄notably the readdition of Viridian Forest.
8 👍 Special Pokémon Respawns
Special encounters no longer disappear for good if the Pokémon is defeated rather than captured. A notable example of this is 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:the Sudowoodo that blocks the path to Ecruteak from Goldenrod before the Squirt Bott🌜le is obtained.
Now, if a special encounter Pokémon is defeated rather th🎃an captured, it will respawn later for the player to attempt again.
7 💖 Berry Trees
Whereas 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:Berry Trees in Johto used to give an assortment of different Berries or Apricorns, they now only give Apricorns. Berries are no longer obtainable by natural means and must be traded in from another game or through various other means. Apricorns also have expanded usage, as they can be bl🗹ended into drinks that improve a Pokém🙈on's Pokéathlon stats with the use of an Apriblender.
6 💦 PokéWalker
A fun new gadget was included with a purchase of HeartGold or SoulSilver: the PokéWalker. This small device could store a Pokémon, which would gain experience and friendship points as ꦇthe player walked in real life.
S𝕴ome Pokémon could be captured in areas exclusive to the PokéWalker, which may ᩚᩚᩚᩚᩚᩚᩚᩚᩚ𒀱ᩚᩚᩚor may not be located in Johto — it's unclear.
5 The Kimono Girls ♓
The Kimono Girls, once residents of a single building in Ecruteak, have an expanded role in the game's story in the remakes. They are now found around the region instead of one🍸 place.
Furthermore, they now play a role in the quest to catch the game mascot Legendary. They must be defeated all in a row to earn the Tidal Bell or Clear Bell, depending on the game version, which is then used to ♛summon Lugia or Ho-oh, respectively.
4 🐬 Pokéathlon
Generation III🅷 and IV had Pokémon Contests, where Pokémon would compete to impress judges in a group of categories. This was replaced with the Pokéathlon in HeartGold & SoulSilver, which was more of a sporting event.
The Pokéathlon had ten events a🐻nd five courses they would be used in, and each species of Pokémon had different Pokéathlon stats that would determi𒁃ne their ability in each event.
The introduction of the Pokéathlon also included a new area: the Pokéathlon Dome, which was located near 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:the National Park.
3 🐟 ♛Commemorative Photos
Before the fancy photography shoots the player could request in X & Y around the Kalos region, there were commemorative photos in Johto. Around the region (and Kanto), the player 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:can take a photo with either their partner Pokém🍒on or their entire party, which can then be viewed with the PC.
A man named Cam﷽eron is happy to take these photos at certain times in certain areas, like the Ilex Forest on Sunday, Tuesday,ไ and Saturday, or Ecruteak on Fridays. His house also replaces the Photo Studio in Cianwood City.
