Moves are a staple part of Pokemon, serving as the main way for Pokemon to battle their opponents. Many fans of the franchise will be familiar with HMs, the much-maligned moves that plagued the games until generation seven. These moves controlled progression through a region, allowing Pokemon to move boulders, cross water, or pass other obstacles that previously served as roadblocks.
What's less well-known, however, is that HMs aren't the only moves with uses outside of battle - in fact, numerous other moves have extra uses that can be employed in the overworld. Here are a few such moves that fe🍎w players will know - or remembe♐r - had additional uses.
10 ಌ Cut Could Be Used To Chop Tall Grass
It's well known that Cut serves to clear trees blocking the player's path, but in generations one through three, it had another purpose. If Cut was used while standing in tall grass, it would essentially mow the grass, leaving a clear area around the player.
The purpose for this was never entirely clear, but at the very least it made routes easier to traverse for players wanting to avoid encounters. Cut also had one other additional use -🅺 in FireRed and LeafGreen it was used to open the door to the Dotted Hole.
9 Flash Has Numerous Uses In The🐻 Field
Flash doesn't have one specific overworld use, but several. In fact, it has the most additional uses of any move in Pokemon. First, as many likely know, it can be used to illuminate dark caves. Secondly, like Cut, it has door-opening capabilities - it opens not just a door in Emerald's Ancient Tomb, but also one in the Ruins of Alph in all games they appear, apart from the original Gold and Silver.
Lastly, while dark caves stopped being a part of the franchise after generation five, Flash took on a different use in generation six's caves in X and Y - it would zoom out the player's perspective, helpfully allowing more of the maze-like caves to be seen.
8 🌸 Dig Can Be Used Like An Escape Ro🌼pe
Dig is another move used to open doors - the Sealed Chamber in Hoenn - but that's not its most interesting use. If used in a cave, Dig will transport you to the cave's entrance, just like an escape rope. This worked in g🎃enerations one through six, though in generation one it transported you to the last visited Pokemon Center instead.
There was no limit on how many times this could be used, meaning if you had a 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:ground-type staple on your team, you'd never have to worry about buying escape ropes - a great bonus for an 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:already strong move.
7 𒈔 Soft-Boiled Can Share Health With Part Members
The signature move of the 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:infamous Chansey line, Soft-Boiled is a vital aspect of the stall strats these Pokemon are known for. Far more obscure, though, is the move's additional use - when selected out-of-battle, Soft-Boiled will transfer 20 percent of the user's HP to another selected party member.
Though this use seems niche, it could be the difference between a Pokemon being sufficiently ready to beat a fight and escape a route or not, so it's a welcome additional use to an already-helpful move.
6 Sweet Scent Can Trigger Wild Encount🌊ers On The Spot
Used in battle to lower evasion, Sweet Scent's overworld use is an interesting one - when used in a cave, in long grass, or on water, a wild encounter will instantly occur. This seems useful for encountering wild Pokemon as fast as possible, but the move's use in the field has an interesting history.
It gained this capability in generation two, and in generation four it was changed so that it only worked in clear weather. Arguably the best change came in generation six, however - Sweet Scent would trigger Horder Encounters specifically, making it 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:perfect for shiny hunting. One generation later, though, in Sun and Moon, the wild encounter ca𝓰pability was removed altogether.
5 Teleport Can Take You To A Pokemon Center From A♛nywhere 𒁃
Most known for making it a nightmare to catch Ralts and Abra, Teleport is useful for escaping unwanted wild encounters once you have a user of it on your team. Its use as an escape tool continues out of battle, though - in generations one through six it will transport you to the last Pokemon Center you visited.
Interestingly, your house also counts for Teleport, so if you'd been home more recently than visiting any Pokemon Centers, that's where the move would take you. Despite its many benefits, it can't be used indoors, meaning it can't be used to escape caves like Dig.
4 Chatter Serves As A Reminder Of Why We Can't Have Nice Things
Chatter is the signature move of Chatot, the parrot Pokemon introduced in Sinnoh. By default, it had 65 power and had a 1 percent chance of confusing the opponent. When using it outside of battle, however, you would be greeted with the option to record a new sound for Chatot to parrot, making use of the DS's new microphone functionality.
The louder your sound, the more the confusion chance went up, but this feature was sadly abused. Players took their Chatot into online battles and had them scream all sorts of profanities at unsuspecting opponents, and so the mechanic was scr𝓰apped after generation five.
3 ⛄ Secret Power Could Set Up Se🌸cret Bases
Secret Power in battle is an interesting move, with its effects varying based on the terrain on which the battle takes place (the literal floor under your feet, not the terrain set by moves). Outside of battle, the move saw additional use in Hoenn games - when used in the right spot, you could create a secret base in a tree or rock face.
Secret bases made a return in Sinnoh's underground, but Secret Power played no role, meaning the move's use as the key to your very own Pokemon lair is likely gone for good.
2 Milk Drink Shꦕares Health Like Soft-Boiled
Like the Chansey line, Miltank is a specially defensive unit, and like the Chansey line, Miltank has a signature move for restoring health. It comes as no surprise then, that like Soft-Boiled, Milk Drink can be used outside of battle to transfer 20 percent of the user's health to another Pokemon.
Again, this is hardly an overwhelmingly strong additional use, but it adds some extra function which could come in very handy indeed. Miltank is a great Pokemon, and this selfless HP sharing just makes it that bit better.
1 ꦛ Headbutt 🐓Could Be Used To Get Encounters From Trees
Headbutt is a strong normal-type move that a lot of Pokemon get access to, making it useful for battle on a ton of critters. In Johto, though, the move had another use - headbutting a tree could trigger an encounter with exclusive wild Pokemon.
This method could be used for everything from Pineco to Hoothoot to Heracross, and a cool detail in the generation two games was that the encountered Pokemon could be asleep depending on the time of day. Because of this, Headbutt was an 𝕴easy way to catch some strong team m🧔embers, and an all-around very helpful move.
