In 1996, Nintendo published Game Freak's Pokémon Red & Blue for the Game Boy. As far as JRPGs go, these two titles proved the genre could be accessible and also work on a more limited handheld system. To say these games were a success would be an understatement, as they outsold everything on the console not called Tetris. While the franchise would eventually expand greatly on its "humble" beginnings, Pokémon Red & Blue continue to hold a special place in the hearts of manyꦬ gamers.

Generation I is arguably the most revered of all of Pokémon's eras; even today, some of its standout Pokédex entries are still used in competitive and casual play. If one were to revisit Red & Blue, which Pokémon would they need⛦ to catch for them to be the strongest?

Updated October 24th, 2020 by Johnny Garcia: It's an exciting time to be a Pokémon fan. The release of The Crown Tundra has given fans of the latest games more content to enjoy. Not only that, but rumors of a new Let's Go game, as well as Generation Four remakes, are emerging as well. Even the TCG is getting some new cards. Fans of every form Pokémon takes have a lot of content to look forward to and play with. With the games, nearly all the Pokémon have found their way back into the PokéDex, some were long missed, including some Generation One Pokémon.

15 ꦫ 🐭 Starmie (435)

starmie underwater anime

Being a Psychic-Type Pokémon is one of the best traits a Pokémon in Red & Blue can have. Mixed with a Water Typing, Starmie takes the🧜 best traits of both those Types. This is why Starmie sees itself on so many teams in Generation One.

Starmie comes equipped with an amazing Speed stat, as well as a solid Special stat to make 💫use of the moveset it has. With access to Thunder Wave, Recover, and other powerful moves like Blizzard, St𒁏armie is an incredibly versatile and hard to get rid of Pokémon.

14 Rhydon (440) 💙

Rhydon preparing to attack in the Pokemon Anime

Rhydon is a Ground/Rock Type Pokémon with devastatingly high Attack, Defense, and HP stats. Rhydon also holds the honor of having the most powerful Earthquake out of any other Pokémon in Red & Blue while losing nothing.

Thanks to its Typing, Rhydon can take a beating and shrug it off. While its Speed is abysmal, its Defensive and Offensive utilities allow it to dominate and dismantle other teams with its power STAB attacks. Unless it's resisted, Rhydon's Earthquakes can completely knock out an opposing Pokémon in one hit, leaving Rhydon as one of the best Pokémon in Red & Blue.

13 ♓ Aꦛerodactyl (440)

Aerodactyl from the Pokemon anime flying in a stadium

Aerodactyl's Speed stat is the second-best in the ga⛎me, sharing that distinction with Jolteon and Mewtwo. Aerodactyl also has a solid Attack and HP sta⛄t. Unfortunately, its Defense and Special stats leave a lot to be desired.

What Aerodactyl does have is tons of good moves in its move pool. Examples of this include Sky Attack and Double-Edge. It's not uncommon for it to one-shot Pokémon, as Aerodactyl has an incredible high critical hit rat🌞e. Its Typing also gives it a fair bit of resistances, something it very much appreciates due to its low defense๊s.

12 ♌ Tauros (450)

Despite not being the most powerful stat-wise, Tauros is the flagship Pokémon of Red & Blue's competitive scene. Being a Normal Type works incredibly well for itꩵ, as its one of the best Types in the game along with Psychic. Tauros has fantastic Speed and Attack, as well as Defense. It's only weak stats are HP and Special.

This makes for one of the best offensive Pokémon in all of Red & Blue. Its moveset is fantastic as well. Tauros has access to some of the best moves in the game in Bod🍰y Slam, Hyper Beam, and Earthquake.

11 Lapras (4ඣ50)

Lapras is one of the most unique Pokémon in all of Red & Blue. It has a sky-high HP stat,꧙ with the rest of its stats being 🎃respectable (sans a weak Speed). However, its Typing of Water and Ice as well as its move pool are what make it so good.

Lapras has access to the powerful STAB Blizzard, along with the always useful Hyper Beam. Lapras is also one of the four Pokémon that can use Sing, and the only one that isn't a Normal Type. Being able to spread Sleep to the opposing team is incredibly powerful, and with how explosive Red & Blue is can make losing those Sleep turns devastating.

10 Exegguto𒐪r (455) 🌼

As Generation I was before Game Freak split the Special stat into Special Attack and Special Defense, all of these Pokémon record higher numbers outside of Red & Blue. Howeve🌠r, they are almost universally more powerful in their debut games.

A Grass/Psychic-type, Exeggutor is among the most well-rounded Pokémon in the first set of games, with only its Speed stat failing to impress. Exeggutor's 125 Special stat means that its special moves not only hit like a truck, but it can also resist an onslaught. As its Special Defense is reduced to 65 from Generation II, Exeggutor is at his best in Red & Blue.

9 𒁃 Arcanine (455) ღ

A Fire Stone can be used to evolve Growlithe into Arcanine, the most powerful 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:Fire-type in Red & Blue that is not a ♔legendary Pokémon. With a  and respectable numbers in every other category, Arcanine is a welcome addition to any team.

Arcanine's learned moveset is decent but not especially varied, something that is common among many Red & Blue Pokémon. Its strongest at♓tack is Flamethrower, a move learned by Growlithe.

8 ও Gyarados (480)

Magikarp might be somewhat useless, but it does eventually evolve into Gyarados. The Water/Flying-type, a combination that remains odd to this day, is an absolute powerhouse that is only outdone in terms of attack power by Machamp, Rhydon, Flareon, Kingler, and Dragonite. With the exception of the latter, Gyaradജos is still overall superior to the other Pokémon.

Due to its predecessor lacking much in the way of solid moves, Gyarados takes a while to amass a deadly line-up of attacks; however, patient players are rewarded with Hype🌌r Beam at level 52.

7 ꩵ 🌸 Cloyster (480)

cloyster in the anime

Red & Blue love to hide their most powerful Pokémon behind evolutionary stones; in this case, trainers need to use a Water Stone for Shellder to evolve into Cloyster. With the stat in Red & Blue, Cloyster lives up to its name by delivering a shell that is ꦛnear impossible to crack. Somethi💃ng that is needed considering it has a rather low amount of HP.

Unlike othe🌌r defensive Pokémon such as Onix, Cloyster can deliver punishment as well as take it.

6 🦋 Articuno (485)

It is to be expected that 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:legendary Pokémon would rank comfortably among their generation's strongest fighters, but Articuno is the weakest of the ones include in Red & Blue.

That said, all of the legendary birds have the same Special stat, 125, and primarily only learn moves of their type. Consequently, there is not all that much difference between them. Articuno also learns , the strongest Ice-type move in Red & Blue.
