Common critiques leveled against Game Freak's Paldean region included subpar visuals and (remarkably) rough performance issues. But the core story was praised, and the two DLCs - Teal Mask and Indigo Disk - have largely continued to impress in that regard.

Plus, there's Terapagos, and a handful of other fresh noteworthy legendaries. We're taking a crack at ranking the best of the bunch, so you can focus on your favorites.

Since legendary 'coolness' is so subjective (and frankly, most of them are pretty cool)ꦍ, our writing will emphasize usefulness first and foremost, be it in your solo Paldea🐻n adventures or against other players worldwide.

6 Ho-Oh

• Location: Area Four, South Province

We'll start by mentioning that, for all returning legendary Pokemon in Indigo Disk, you will need to acquire the proper items from a certain Mr. Snacksworth. Grinding through the 'BBQ' quests isn't hard, but it can be time-consuming, and only Pokemon Scarlet players will find Ho-Oh via Solo Quests. Once Snacksworth's given you the proper treat for Ho-Oh to spawn, well... have fun, because Ho-Oh rocks.

With a base Attack stat of 130, and a base Special Defense of 154, this somewhat uniquely-designed spread makes it perfect for enduring Special Sweepers while breaking through Special Walls. Sacred Fire has a 100 base power (effectively 150 since Ho-Oh's Fire typing matches accordingly), and inflicts Burn half the time. Brave Bird's 120 becomes 180 - and that 33 percent recoil will sting, but Ho-Oh's bulky enough in the HP department to handle it with relative grace. Even if the going gets tough, Ho-Oh's got Recover.

5 Spectrier

• Location: West of Dalipaza Passage

Spectrier, the ghostly counterpart to Glastrier in Pokemon Sword & Shield's excellent Crown Tundra DLC, Spectrier's all about Special Attack and Speed, with 145 and 130, respectively. Nasty Plot will further its devastating offensive reign, boosting Shadow Ball into the upper echelons of destruction.

Toss in Will-O-Wisp for an easy Burn (especially if Ho-Oh isn't already on your team), equip it with a Spell Tag, and you've got yourself what is quite possibly the most powerful Ghost-type striker in Pokemon Scarlet & Violet. We appreciate its trip from the cold reaches of Galar.

4 Zekrom

• Location: South of Artazon

Reshiram and Kyurem, Zekrom's fifth-generational counterparts, are both fantastic in their own right. But as far as we're concerned, the Electric/Dragon-type Zekrom has always been on a whole 'nother level, up to and including Scarlet & Violet. An Attack stat of 150, flanked by impressive Special Attack and Defense stats of 120, keep it primed for the 20-percent-Paralysis-odds Bolt Strike's 130 base power. Give yours Dragon Claw to take advantage of its secondary typing.

Zekrom's perhaps not quite as speedy as its Electric typing might at first suggest, but 90 is nothing to scoff at - especially not if you've got Dragon Dance to boost not just Attack another tier, but Speed as well. Life Orb is likely worth the 10 percent loss in HP per strike to turn Zekrom into an even bigger monster.

3 Terapagos

• Location: Arena Zone Underdepths during climax of Indigo Disk's main story

The one new legendary-class Pokemon in Pokemon Scarlet & Violet's Indigo Disk DLC, Terapagos is a mighty one. In its Tera Shell form, all attacks are only half effective against it at full health, making it a rather specific brand of wall, but a welcome one that'll surely have some players panicking as to how to handle it in one fell swoop. In Teraform Zero form, its stats shoot towards the stars; HP's base is 160, and Special Attack is 130. Don't worry about that bulky HP count going to waste, as Defense and Special Defense are both 110.

With powerful moves by default, Terapagos is a threat, and will continue to be one for the remainder of the ninth generation's competitive scene.

2 Urshifu

• Location: Kubfu, its pre-evolved form, is found at Fury Falls

You will need to evolve your caught Kubfu in⛄to Urshifu or Rapid Strike Urshifu via the Scrolls of Water and Darkness, respectively, found at the auction over in Port Marinada. Whichever form you choose, your🧸 Urshifu will have the same sterling 130 Attack, 100 HP and Defense, and 97 (weird) Speed.

Since Rapid Strike Urshifu has the Fighting/Water typing, Surging Strikes' three-hit, critical-guaranteed, Water-type move is a must. Wicked Blow taps into the normal Urshifu's Fighting/Darkness with a solid base power of 75 that's also guaranteed to score a critical. You'll get Same Type Attack Bonus regardless - Urshifu is truly a physical powerhouse first and foremost. But the best thing about Urshifu is its Unseen Fist ability, which pummels straight past Protect, Detect, and anything akin to those moves. Terrifying, to be honest.

1 Rayquaza

• Location: Outskirts of Area Zero, at the uppermost tip of South Province Area Three

The mighty dragon who put a stop to the rampages of Groudon and Kyogre back in Pokemon Emerald (or one of either Groudon or Kyogre in Ruby & Sapphire and their 3DS remakes), Rayquaza is back in full (Dragon) Force. It's a potent mixed sweeper - meaning its Attack and Special Attack, both 150, can rip through prey. The Air Lock ability negates weather effects, which will come especially in handy against moves like Archaludon's Electro Shot. Honestly, that alone puts Rayquaza ahead of the curve.

Despite the lack of Same Type Attack Bonus, you should consider hooking Rayquaza up with Earthquake if it's not already a fixture in your squad. Dragon Dance is never a bad idea, and Dragon Ascent and Draco Meteor are your STAB standbys. The newly-introduced Dragon Cheer will elevate Rayquaza's critical hit ratio by two (!) stages, so set that up if needed and watch the carnage unfold.
