In this guide to the Temporal Forces archetypes, learn about the new archetypes that originate in this set. Plus, discover how 𓆏decks that may have thrived or even may not have reached thei♊r full potential in previous eras are also given meta relevance.

Knock Out Counters: Heavy Baton and Iron Boulder ex

Miraidon ex From Scarlet And Violet

Throughout much of the initial expansions provided in Scarlet and Violet, there has been a notable focus on Pokemon able to counter Knock Outs. One of the greatest examples of this is t♏hrough Charizard ex, which provides scaling damage based on how many Prize Cards your opponent has taken.

With Temporal Forces, this archetype is elevated even further, meshing popular cards such as Iron Hands ex and Miraidon with cards originating in this set. Heavy Baton is a prime card to pair with Iron Hands ex. It is a tool card that all🎶ows you to move Energies after the Pokemon this tool is attached to is Knocked Out, so long as that Pokemon meets the requirements of:

  • Being Knocked Out by damage from an opponent’s attack
  • Having a Retreat Cost of exactly 4
  • Being in the Active Spot when Knocked Out.

Iron Boulder ex also provides a Knock Out counter. However, instead of focusing on countering by accelerating Energy elsewhere on your Bench, it works by providing damage in return. So long as Iron Boulder ex uses its Repulsor Axe attack, during the next turn, if it is damaged by an attack, the Pokemon that attacked Iron Boulder ex will receive 8 damage counters. This occurs even if Iron Boulder ex is Knocked Out by that attack!

Iron Boulder ex is also viable with other cards emerging in Temporal Forces, such as Iron Crown ex which provides scaling d🦂amage based on Future Pokemon in play.

Ancient Single-Prize Mill: Great Tusk

Mimikyu from the PAL expansion in the Pokemon TCG

Temporal Forces also brings with it viable, single prize focused decks based on rogue techniques. One of the best examples of this is Great Tusk, which will provide an option for milling your opponent. For two colorless Energy, Great Tusk can discard the top card of your opponent’s deck. However, if you play an Ancient Supporter during your turn, such as Professor Sada's Vitality, you can discard the top three instead.

Mill decks are common in many different eras of Pokemon TCG. Great Tusk combines a high HP with an attack that fits into many decks existing prior to Temporal Forces, such as Koraidon ex. Great Tusk can also benefit from being played alone, paired with technical cards 🐎such as Radiant Greninja and Mimikyu.

Control and High Damage: Roaring Moon and Flutter Mane

This set of Pokemon TCG provides a single prize Roaring Moon option, a card unseen in previous sets of ♐Scarlet and Violet. It also includ♊es Flutter Mane, which can deactivate any of your opponent’s Active Pokemon’s Abilities.

Flutter Mane's Ability is named Midnight Fluttering. While this Ability is activated, Midnight Fluttering is the only Ability able to be in play. This means that if your opponent has a Flutter Mane in the Active Spot, its Ability will stil𝓡l be active.

This single prize version of Roaring Moon will allow it to deal scaling damage based on the number of Ancient cards in your discard pile. This takes into account Pokemon, Items, Tools, and Supporters. As a result, it provides an attacker that is at its peak during the late game. This can easily be combined with cards popular in Temporal Forces and earlier sets.

Archetype and Deck Improvements Over Sword and Shield

Although the Temporal Forces expansion provides a variety of archetypes not seen in the previous expansion, there are several archetypes from the Sword and Shield era improved by the cards in this set.

One of the decks from this era that are revised through Temporal Forces is Origin Forme Diagla VSTAR. With the addition of Metang from this set, with its Metal Maker Ability, you’ll be able to attach up to four Energies to any of your Pokemon as you wish, including Origin Forme Diagla VSTAR. With two Metangs on the Bench, you can use this Ability twice. This can 🏅allow you to attach up to eight Energies.

Metal Maker allows you to look at the to look at the top four cards of your deck and attach any Metal Energ﷽y found there to your P💞okemon.

Origin Forme Palkia VSTAR also experiences changes with Temporal Forces. While other Scarlet and Violet additions such as Sandy Sho🌳cks ex from Paradox Rift have created a new meta surrounding this popular Swo🦂rd and Shield era deck, Raging Bolt ex will also provide a different way to utilize Origin Forme Palkia.
