The thing is, I’m unsure my actual skill had anything to do with it, especially since I was still a fresh-f😼aced newbie having just finished the tutorial. But here I was, taking names and kicking ass with the best of them as I slam-dunked mysterious orbs into each objective like there was no tomorrow.
It felt amazing, particularly giv♓en that I had to do most of the heavy lifting myself on account of my team refusing to properly play the objective. I’m not a fiercely competitive gamer, but if victory is attainable I will do everything I can to achieve it. Pokemon Unite’s ten-minute matches and simplistic approach to the MOBA formula meant I immediately knew what was expected of me as I waltzed into the bottom lane and began wiping out minions to earn experience points and pick up essential orbs required to whittle down each of the enemy team’s towers. The problem was that I seemed to be the only one who understood this basic level of coordination.
Aside from one of my allies, who was busy repeatedly geಞtting killed in the jungle, everyone else had flooded the top lane and decided to leave me on my lonesome. The opposing team had a similar idea with the exception of a few stragglers, who I was able to dispatch with relative ease by luring them to my tower where I could simultaneously heal myself and deal out damage without much risk.
Before long my Pokemon was popping up on screen as I earned streaks that demonsꦬtrated my prowess. Most of my adversaries were unaware of how the genre works, not knowing that straying too far from safety while alone is a recipe for your own demise. I was still learning the ropes, deciding to play as Lucario with his powerful melee attacks and ability to dart out of harm’s way with a directional movement ability that saved my skin on more than one occasion. It al💙so made scooping up stray orbs much easier, especially when my allies and enemies seemed determined to leave all of them behind.
When Zapdos spawned, everyone rushed towards the legendary creature with their eyes on the prize. I decided to ignore it, sin🃏ce I earned more bankable points by circling round the map and picking up all of the orbs that had been foolishly left behind by the competition. Before Zapdos was killed I had a full 50 to my name, which I banked at the nearest tower and won us the game as a result. I’m fairly sure Pokemon Unite isn’t meant to be played like this, and someone should have been butting heads with me at every moment instead of allowing me to single-handedly wipe the floor with the enemy team. But hey, I still won and that’s what matters, right?
I can understand why so many Pokemon Unite players are unaware of how more demanding MOBAs like League of Legends and Dota 2 are meant to work. The much shorter match time means that being brash and reckless is far more beneficial than it is in those games, with short bursts of scoring meaning far more in Unite than any of its MOB🍌A counterparts. It’s also a free-to-play Pokemon game, meaning millions of young players will be jumping into this genre for the first time with little understanding of how it functions. That’s exciting and expected, so perhaps I shouldn’t be raging at allies failing to stay in their lanes and refusing to play a specific role when they’re learning the ropes much like I am.
Ranked play is hopefully a different ballgame, since general matchmaking doesn’t possess the challenge I was expecting from a game like this and isn’t testing my skill in the slightest. I think I’ll turn to my expert colleagues for some advice on how to best approach Pokemon Unite going forward, since I don’t want it to become an experience where the game design is diluted by a team-based structure that doesn’t incentivise working together because of how anonymous it all is. MOBAs are games that often require voice chat and constant communication, but Pokemon💜 Unite reinvents it in such a fundamental way that such things aren’t needed anymore. Maybe I’m judging both the community and my own abilities far too early - I’ll report back once I’m a certified pro.
