Even with the deleted dislikes, both videos have clearly received a negative reception. That, and the fact that Pokémon is partnering with Tencent Games – a company known for squeezing every nickel out of its mobile gaming base – has led many to believe that Unite is a shameless cash grab.
This fear is made even worse by the game's trailer. After celebrating its 20th anniversary in 2016, P🎐okémon has shown a trend of pulling on the nostalgia strings in itꦆs game announcements. The trick worked great at first, but became more and more disingenuous with each new game.
Now, playing to the fond memories of past Pokémon games while introducing a spinoff (that is completely unrelated) is borderline insulting. Fans of the series aren't buying it anymore, which is why the reception for Pokémon Unite has been less than welcoming.
It's also worth noting that players have been waiting quite a while for a remake of Pokémon Diamond and Pearl, but those games don't seem to be coming anytime soon. Although the Pokémon fan base has developed a reputa🏅tion for being toxic as of late, the frustration feels a bit more warranted this time than it may have been in the past.
