The player is actually the person that teaches Wally how to catch Pokémon. Most players that have played the generation 3 games recently may already know this fact however it's easily forgotten because of how long ܫago they came out.
When Wally is catching his first Pokémon the protagonist takes him out theℱ catch it and teach him how to battle a wild creature. This was a great act of friꦗendship that unfortunately was quickly forgotten and it was one of the best scenes in the game because finally instead of somebody teaching the player, they got to teach a character instead!
