Out of all the fictional companies introduced in games, few are as iconic as Portal's Aperture Science - the achievers of incredible scientific progress the world over. Of course, most of Aperture's work was on the internal side, engineering and testing new, often impractical ideas, which didn't result in a lot of consumer-ready products.

Whether they were ready for shelves or not, though, they did manage to crank out a few products. In the spirit of testing, let's rank the few products Aperture trademarked (if not publicly released) based on their test applications, practicality, and general coolness factor.

10 ไ Hea🌠vy Duty Super Button - A Fancy Name For a Giant Weight Plate

The 1500 Megawatt Aperture Science Heavy Duty Super-Colliding Super Button has a very long and very impressive name for a device that is, for all intents and purposes, a fancy weight plate. You put heavy objects on it, and in turn it sends simple electrical signals and turns stuff on. Weight plates are not especially advanced technology, so even if Aperture released this device to the public, it wouldn't really have too many interesting applications.

9 Aerial Faith Plate - High-Flying, Hard-Fal🥂ling 🔯

On paper, the idea of a high-powered launching device built right into your floor sounds pretty nifty. Think of how much fun it would be to fly through the air at high speeds. Unfortunately, unless you're wearing a pair of Long-Fall Boots, or have a high perch to land on, it'll probably stop being fun once you start falling to the ground. Humans ain't meant to fly, after all. Maybe the Aerial Faith Plate could be marketed better if it came with a free stunt airbag...

8 Weighted Storage Cube - It's A Heavy Box

When you think about futuristic settings, you think of containers and architecture colored in shiny white with either stark, angular designs or smooth and sleek designs. The Aperture Science Weighted Storage Cube falls into the former, and to its credit, has a very attractive, futuristic design. But beneath that cool design, well... it's a box. A heavy box. Through the lens of testing, it's only really good for weighing stuff down or lobbing at things, and in the real world, you don't really need a fancy science box when a plain old cardboard one would work just as well.

7 💖 Conversion Gel - Cool, But Impractical And Poisonous

A pipe dispensing Conversion Gel in Portal 2

When Aperture Science was in the red financially, Cave Johnson decided - against his accountants' advice - to buy a bunch of genuine moon rocks for entirely too much money. Those rocks were ground up and turned into a gel which - good news - was handy for turning any surface into a portal-compatible one. Bad news - the gel was highly toxic, leading to Cave's severe illness and eventual death. That's millions of dollars for a really cool idea that is also extremely deadly and generally pointless for anyone who doesn't already own a Portal Gun (which is everyone).

6 ܫ Hard-Light Bridge - Now With Real Sunlight!

Whether the Hard-Light Bridge is something Aperture's scientists conceived, or something 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:GLaDOS cooked up on a whim isn't clear - but in either case, it's a heck of an idea. By piping in actual sunlight from the surface through a solar array and performing... some manner of nondescript science, GLaDOS could create solid surfaces out of thin air.

According to her, if you rub your face on it, it actually feels like being out in the sun, though apparently, that would also set your hair on fire. It's a great idea, it just needs some safety features.

5 Repulsion Gel - Make A Trampoline Anywhꦐere!

The Repulsion Gel could be considered an upgrade on the Aerial Faith Plate, as it turns just about any surface into a bouncy trampoline that, at least as far as we know, is safe to land on from most elevations. It's a fun way to get around, and invaluable for testing purposes. Though according to Aperture's lab techs, whatever the gel is actually made of apparently doesn't get along very well with your skeleton if you get covered in it. This, presumably, is one of the reasons it was recalled from its original use as a dietetic pudding substitute that would bounce food out of your stomach.

4 Propulsion Gel - Slip Slidin' Away

Propulsion Gel eliminates the friction from any surface or objects it coats. This makes stuff slippery, as well as increases their velocity since friction is a primary factor in an object's ability to stop moving. While potentially very dangerous, it could definitely have some cool applications for speed on-foot travel. It's like skating on a polished floor with your socks! Amusingly, Propulsion Gel was also originally designed as a dietetic pudding, with this one shooting food directly through your digestive system before it could begin breaking down. Of course, that does mean you'd have fully-formed food shooting out your 'other end' at high speed.

3 ൩ Long Fall Boots - Gravity Is Over༒rated Anyway

A diagram for Long Fall Boots in Portal 2

In the early testing phases of the Portal Gun, Aperture techs were having a problem with test subjects 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:falling to their deaths, damaging the Portal Gun in the process. That thing was not cheap, so they needed a means of keeping it safe during testing (along with the subject, time permitting). The solution was as simple as it was elegant: the Long Fall Boots - a stylish pair of special leg braces that could completely absorb the impact of any fall, no matter the height and speed. How exactly these boots actually work is a mystery, but without them, Chell wouldn't be able to pull off even half the stunts she does in the Portal series.

2 🏅 Turrets - Stylish And Deadly

When you have something important you want to protect, be it in your home or office - you don't leave the job to some half-baked security system, you leave it to the Aperture Science Turret! Turrets stand vigilant wherever you place them, with 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:their soft voices and polite intonations serving both, to soothe and ꧒intimida🍌te.

They also come in all kinds of designer colors to match your decor, like Forest, Desert, Table, and Evening at the Improv. Fun fact, Turrets don't actually fire bullets the normal way, instead launching the entire bullet and casing with a powerful spring-loaded mechanism. Strange, yes, but hey, no spent shell casings cluttering up the floor!

1 ♓ Ha✃ndheld Portal Device - Well, Obviously

Blueprints of the Portal Gun from Portal

As if anything else was going to be number one. The Aperture Science Quantum Tunneling Device, more commonly known as the Portal Gun, is the signature tool for Aperture Science. In-universe, Aperture sunk millions into the development of the Portal Gun, putting all of its best and brightest minds into perfecting it, as well as basing many of its other experiments around its usage. On the meta-level, the Portal Gun is the signature device of the entire Portal series, and despite having a fairly simple design, its appearance, as well as the appearance of its blue and orange portals, have become staples of 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:modern gaming culture.
