has won the top prize at the Flesh and Blood event, securing a spot at the 2021 National Championships. Despite an overall dominance of Chane decks at the event, Horspool managed his win with one of only two Prism ꦏdecks found in the top eight.
The Calling events are part of Flesh and Blood's four-tiered organised play system, serving as heats to find the invitees for the National Championships, due to be held in Orlando, Florida on November 5-7. The first of these was hosted in Las Vegas, Nevada this weekend, with allegedly competing in a classic, 60-card constructed format. By taking the top spot, Horspool won $1200, an exclusive 'golden cold foil' extended art print of Fyendal's Spring Tunic, and that much-coveted invite to compete in the National Championships and formally join the Pro Tour.
For those unfamiliar with the game, Flesh and Blood has you build decks around an individual hero, with the cards in your deck representing their equipment, abilities, and attacks. It was expected that the event would be dominated by the hero Chane, who has consistently sat on top of the meta for Flesh and Blood since his introduction in Monarch, and, to an extent, we saw that here. Event organisers reported that 45% of the top 64 decks on day two were Chane-centric, and out of the top eight finalists were runni෴ng him.
In that context, Horspool's win with Prism is important. Not only is it great to see a not-as-dominant deck win out (although Prism is a close second) despite all expectations, it will also be interesting to see how many Chanes turn up at the next constructed event, which is the ProQuest side-event held at the Fort Worth-Dallas, Texas on October 15-17.
Speaking of ProQuest, also going to the National Championships is , who won the Las Vegas Calling's Monarch sealed ProQuest. ProQuests are smaller, free-to-enter events intended as a second chance to get onto the Pro Tour, usually using a different format to the main event – for instance, while Dalas' ProQuest is going to be classic constructed, the event itself will be a limited-focused tournament, with Monarch sealed and drafted play over Las Vegas' constructed.
The next Calling is in on October 1🐷5-17, before heading to on October 22-24. The final US Calling is in on 5-7, where it will share the weekend and venue with the National Championships.
