PlayStation has now sold 9 million PS5s s𝔉ince launch which means it is already breathing down the neck of th𝕴e Dreamcast.

As the PS5 approaches eight months since its launch, new figures from have revealed the console has already shifted more than 9 million units. Not only is that incredibly impressive considering most of the world still seems desperate to get one and is unable to, but it's also almost four million more consoles than the Xbox Series X|S has managed to sell so far.

It also means the PS5 is quickly ascending up the list of the best-selling consoles of all time despite being on the market for less than a year. While it is yet to surpass anyone of note thus far, by the time the next sales figures are revealed it will have overtaken the Dreamcast and also the Sega Saturn. Bad news for Sonic's creators.

As for the long-term, Sony appears incredibly confident in the PS5's sales potential despite still not being able to have supply meet demand. In its third financial year, the one ending in March 2023, Sony predicts the PS5 will sell 22.6 mil😼lion units. That number is significant for a reason. It would break the record for most PlayStation 🤪consoles sold in a single financial year. That record belongs to the PS1 and has been in place since 1998.

The PS5 has already been setting records. It sold 7.8 million𒁏 units before the end of its first financial🦩 year, just edging out what the PS4 managed to sell during the same period following its own launch. Since the PS4 now sits at 115 million consoles sold and counting, Sony will be hopeful the PS5 will have surpassed that by the end of its run. Whether it can overtake the PS2, which remains the best-selling console of all time, will be som💙ething else entirely.

As for those aforementioned shortages, PlayStation is doing all that it can to ensure they ease up as soon as possible. Jim Ryan remains hopeful the console will be more readily available by the end of 2021. There have also been reports that a tweak to the console's design will allow it to be made at a quicker pace. If true, that tweak will be instigated starting in 202꧋2.
