Muskrats can be found in every state across RDR2’s American West though they keep to small concentrated habitats within each. As semiaquatic rodents, Muskrats stick near the various bodies of water and are best hunted with a Varmint Rifle. Their meat is stringy and admittedly not v꧒ery appetizing, but Muskrats can serve o𒈔ther crafting purposes as well.
American Muskrat Locations
New Austin
- In New Austin, Muskrats keep to the southern shores of Rio Bravo and Gaptooth Ridge along the San Luis River.
- They also inhabit a small area near the West Elizabeth border around Stillwater Creek.
- You may find a light population near the docks at Thieve’s Landing.
West Elizabeth
- Bridging the border between New Austin and West Elizabeth, Muskrats can be found scampering around a particular area of the Lower Montana River.
- You’ll also find them along the island’s eastern shore between Thieve’s Landing and Quaker Cove.
- Further north, Muskrats can be found all along the Upper Montana River, where it springs from the western border above Owanjila all the way down to where the river flows into Flat Iron Lake.
- Muskrats also dwell along Hawk’s Eye Creek near where the stream is formed from the runoff of Mount Shann.
- Another favorite Muskrat hunting ground is along the stretch of the Dakota River that separates West Elizabeth and New Hanover. They tend to be more prominent around the upper bend in the river.
Ambardino
- Following the Dakota River into Ambardino, another population of Muskrats has been sighted along the banks north of Valentine.
- The Calumet Ravine is a popular watering hole among these rodents.
- They will also gather slightly south below Donner Falls, often around the Bacchus Bridge/Station region.
New Hanover
- Heading east into New Hanover, Muskrats dwell along the northern stretches of the Kamassa River in the Roanoke Ridge region around Annesburg.
- They also hang around the eastern edge of Annesburg, along the shores of the Lannahechee River.
- Sections of the Kamassa River west and southwest of the Van Horn Trading Post are reliable hunting grounds as well.
- The last place to check if you’re in New Hanover will be around the Heartland Overflow trailing down towards Emerald Ranch.
Lemoyne

Lemoyne’s Bluewater Marsh and Bayou Nwa hold the densest population of Muskrat.

You can wander all over the northern region of Lemoyne, across the land spanning between the Kamassa and Lannahechee.
- This habitat spans south, through Lagras and Lakay, to the northern border of Saint Denis.
- The stretch of the Kamassa River that bends around Caliga Hall and meets up with the Lannahechee is a promising location for Muskrat as well.

The Scarlett Meadows doesn’t have as significant a Muskrat population as eastern Lemoyne, but a few key watering holes exist.
- Ringneck Creek
- Mattock Pond
- Southfield Flats
- The last location that’s worth a visit if you’re hunting Muskrat is the isles of Flat Iron Lake, just off of Lemoyne’s western shores.
