The sprawling landscape of Red Dead Redemption 2 is rendered with painstaking attention to detail. It’s no surprise that, even after two years on shelves, players are still exploring the seams of Rockstar’s open-world, survival game.
Reddit user thinks they may have noticed a detail that𝓀, until now, has been ignored by the Red Dead community. Bornstellar67 shared a clip to r/reddead൲redemption2 that appears to show the game’s protagonist, Arthur Morgan, counting bullets as he reloads his pistol.
Arthur empties his revolver during an altercation on a moving train car. He then turns toward the camera as he takes cover and reloads the gun. In the clip below, you can clearly see hi꧒s lips moving as he methodically places round after round into his six-shooter, but📖 not everyone is convinced of Bornstellar67’s hypothesis.
Red Dead Redemption 2 is no slouch in the world-building department. Rockstar went to great lengths to provide an experience that mirrors the harsh reality of the game’s setting. Players can be struck by lightning, the animals hunt each other, and there are nearly half a million lines of dialogue in the game. A purported claim that Rockstar went through♛ the trouble of animating Arthur Morgan counting his bullets isn’t a ridiculous one, but it doesn’t carry much weight if it can’t ward off a healthy dose of skepticism.
Many of the naysayers are quick to point out that the lip movements don’t quite perfectly sync up with Arthur’s hand movements, which is a fair criticism. But, as user u/Ghalilee points out, small details like this would be rendered at a relatively high frame rate, which could be the source of the slight delℱay.
Another Reddit user, who claims to have years of lip-reading experience, says that the words being mouthed are clearly not numbers. u/Silentweasle shares that gunslingers of Arthur’s sort would often assign sho𒅌rt phrases to each of their weapons to make counting rounds easier, citing “Ol Western lore” as the source of this shared knowledge.
This back-and-forth has been almost constant since the clip was posted on Thursday, but most fans seem to at least buy into the plausibility of Bornstellar67’s 🌜claim. Even if this find turns out to be a farce, Red Dead Redemption 2 undoubted🅺ly has a few surprises left up its sleeve.
