I’ve been eagerly awaiting animated series ever since it was announced, and 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:I&rsꦐquo;ve got the article to prove it. Now that the show is finally out in the wild, I’m surprised – pleasantly! – that it’s got even more meat to it than I first thought. An animated series with the movie’꧅s original cast, animated by the excellent Science SARU 𓃲and sporting a soundtrack by Anamaguchi, composer of the Scott Pilgrim video game, was always going to be good, but an early plot twist in the animated show has turned it into a different beast altogether. Some spoilers ahead.

In the show’s first episode, we see the story play out much in the way the graphic novels and live-action movie adaptation did. Scott sees Ramona Flowers in his dreams, concocts a stupid plan to ask her out, they hook up, he gets her to come to his band’s show, and the first of her evil exes, Matthew Patel, challenges him to a fight. This is where it gets weird – instead of Scott winning the battle, as happens canonically in the graphic novels and the movie, Matthew p𓂃unches Scott to death. For fans of the source material, this is a jaw-dropping early plot twist that creates an entirely new narrative for the show that has much less to do with Scott, an🐎d much more to do with Ramona.

My love for the Scott Pilgrim franchise definitely has nothing to do with the fact that sometimes drunk girls at the bar will tell me🔯 I look like Ramona Flowers.

To put it broadly, instead of passively watching Scott beat the shit out of her exes, Ramona is now the one who pursues her exes and attempts to bury the hatchet with them. As TheGamer’s Lead Features Editor Jade King put it in 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:her review, the show now centers on Ramona’s own journey towards growth and forgiveness. Yeah, there are still fight scenes – very well-done ones, I should add – but the show now gives Ramona’s exes the development they deserve. It's more an alternate-reality spin-off than it is a direct adaptation of the graphic novels, and that’s incredible.

It’s awesome not just because it’s a creative spin on an already much-adapted series, but because it knows what was wrong with the original graphic novels. People have long rolled their eyes at Scott being the hero, considering he’s basically a bum who miraculously manages to finagle his way into a relationship with the much cooler Ramona Flowers by beating up her exes on her behalf. This retelling centers women and 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:previously overlooked ✃queer characters, and does it with skill and heart.

Scott Pilgrim Takes Over

In a media landscape absolutely filled to the brim with reboots, remakes, and adaptations, audiences are tired of seeing the same old movies and games made over and over again with little reckoning with the source material. I can’t help but think of 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:The Last of Us 2 Remastered, which was confirmed 🀅just a few days ago, and promises higher fidelity graphics on the PS5 and, apart from a new game mode and some lost levels, not much else. And also every live-action Disney adaptation. And also most movie remakes, to be quite frank.

There are so many more interesting ways to appr♊oach a franchise as established as Scott Pilgrim, and franchises in general. By criticising its own flaws in a somewhat meta way, Scott Pilgrim has impressed audiences in a way it couldn’t have if it had been a straight adaptation. I only wish more iconic series would have the courage to do what this show has done, but considering that it’s financially safer to not take chances like that, it’s likely Scott Pilgrim Takes Off will be a fairly unique case. What a shame – this is the first addition to a franchise to delight me so much in years.
