Remedy first came to the public's attention with their gritty action title Max Payne, released in 2001. This is the game's most gla🔴ring injustice, and comes from the ambitious🐎 graphics. Depending on which console one plays it on, performance will vary from slow to inexcusable.
Some action scenes on the base PS4 chug along at a frame rate one rarely sees in modern gaming. Even stranger, the game freezes for several seconds after talking to people and the transitions out of the pause menu are often jarring. It doesn't quite reach levels of Max Payne 2's infamous PS2 port, but it comes close.

It wastes no time in getting the main character, Jesse Faden, into the thick of things inside the Oldest House. The cutscenes are heightened by the talent on display from actors like James McCaffrey, famous for playing Max Payne, and Courtney Hope, recognizable from Quantum Break. Additionally, the integration of live🦂 action footage is top notch.
8 𝓀 Worst: Bureau Alerts
The game is packed in with a beefy helping of side missions. Some of these come in the for𝓰m of Bureau Alerts, ꦉtimed missions that randomly pop up. They typically require Jesse traveling to a certain area and eliminating enemies.
If the player dies, the mission instantly fails. They appear when the player is🌄 on their way to do something else, often feeling like they want to take gamers' attention. While they provide resources, they interrupt the flow of gameplay. Fortunately, the can be ignored with no consequences.
7 Best: Combat ⛎
Battles in Control are a booming spectacle. Jesse has numerous tools at her disposal for taking out the Hiss infected souls that make up the enemy forces. She can throw objects in the environment with launch, put up a shield to block attacks, and use her trusty service weapon that transf༺orms to mimic different types of guns from pistols to shotguns and grenade launchers.
One of the last abilities she receives is levitation,🍸 which adds a whole new dimension to combat🔯. Taking the fight midair changes the dynamic completely, making the player feel like a superhero.
6 ꦚ Worst: Bosses
For all their talents, Remedy has never been known to produce compelling boss encounters. To its credit, Control comes the closest, with each one being a genuine fight betweဣen the character and a monster, but they still leave a lot to be desired.
Some of them are too hard, killing the player in one or two hits, and others are bullet sponges that are more tests of endurance than skill. Thankfully, most of them are rel🐻egated to side missions, so they can be skipped if they are causing too much trouble.

The awe of Control's presentation cannot be understated. Everything from the character models to environments is unmatched by mo✱st other AAA titles🦩.
Remedy's performance capture tecꦗhnology is breathtaking; the actors' in-game avatars look like one to one matches of their real-life counterparts. With certain shots, one could be fooled into thinking it was a photograph. In motion, it is just as impressive, at least when the frame rate isn't taking a dive.
4 Worst: Unforgiving Chec♔k♍points
Control points are where Jesse gets a breather and the opportunity to upgrade her abilities and service we🀅apon. These also serve as fast travel locations and checkpoints. Dying sends Jesse back to the last one she passed. It's usually not a big deal when one fails in combat, but some checkpoints feel unforgiving.
A couple of boss encounters require the player to travel through an area before the actual fight. Lose, and spawn back at the control point, forcing Jesse to retrace he👍r steps once again before finding the encounter. Dying at a boss several times and going through this process over and over again becomes needlessly tedious.
3 Best: Exploration ♈
the Oldest House is ဣa labyrinth, but every nook and cranny off the beaten path has a secret of its own, whethe🃏r it be a document or an upgrade. Looking around and backtracking to access previously locked locations is a fulfilling experience. It also helps that the simple act of navigating the environment is fun, as Jesse's movement is smooth as butter.
Fans of Alan Wake will also find several alluring easter eggs if they search🍷 hard enough. If one simply goes on the main path, they will still understand the main story, but miss so much of the world-building and interesting tid𝓀bits about the Federal Bureau of Control.
2 🌳 Worst: Uncanny Valley 𓆉
As good as the graphics and character models are, the latter falls into the u🦂ncanny valley on a few unfortunate occasions. Somꦑe close-ups of Jesse's face can look just the slightest bit off, throwing a kink into the otherwise convincing depiction of the actress in the virtual world.
Everything else about the perf♓ormances is stunning, so a weird moment here and there does little to detract from the overall experience. As time and technology march on, this will become less and less of a problem.

Not only is the Oldest House a joy to explore, it ♎is also a blast to tear apart. The majority of the objects can be thrown across the room and battles turn the💛se office environments into a rockstar's hotel room.
Even before Jesse eꩵarns the ability to pick up objects like a Jedi, running into various things in the environment already displays the impressive physics. The Oldest House has a sterile aesthetic, giving the proceeding destruction during combat an added impact.
