The original PlayStation had an incredible trilogy of mainline Resident Evil games, but this was only due to a late decision to change Resident Evil 3: Nemesis from a spin-off title into a numbered 🗹entry in the series.

Resident Evil 3: Nemesis is considered to be both the prequel and the direct sequel to Resident Evil 2, as it starts out before Claire and Leon's adventures in Raccoon City. Jill is incapacitated, and when she's mobile again, the protagonists from Resident Evil 2 have a💞lready escaped. Jill is then left with the task of escapi꧙ng from Raccoon City with Nemesis hot on her heels.

Resident Evil 3 was developed with the intention of it being a spin-off game, rather than a full-fledged numbered entry. Director Kazuhiro Aoyama told  that his intention was to make an "indie" Resident Evil game that would appeal to the hardcore fans, and he was worried that its short length would turn people off it became a nuไmbered entry. Before the game was expanded, the original intention was for it to last about two hours and for the story to🦋 conclude with the Nemesis encounter at the Clock Tower.

Aoyama has speculated that the reason why Resident Evil 3: Nemesis was bumped up from a spin-off game to a numbered entry was due to Capcom becoming a publically listed company in the '99 fiscal year, and that the hඣigher-ups wanted a hit game during that period.

The game that was meant to act as the continuation of the Resident Evil storyline was CODE: Veronica, but Capcom decided to number the Resident Evil games that appeared on Sony platforms and use subtitles for the games on other systems. As it stands, the storyline of the Resident Evil series has continued in both numbered𒅌 entries a⛄nd spin-offs.
