The fourth entry pioneered a number of industry-shaking ideas and changed the shooter genre forever, but looking back it was also fraught with awkward niggles I’m glad the remake smoothed out. Leon can now move while aiming, Ashley doesn’t exist purely to get stuck at the top of ladders and hide in nearby bins, and certain irritating encounters have been removed entirely, while bosses have been improved tenfold.

For all its improvements and modern touches, something about Resident Evil 4 is lost when the attache case becomes convenient. I still recall moments of sudden panic as I ran out of ammo in my main driver and had no choice but to jump into my case in search of something that could save the day. Often it’d be a flash grenade or a lame pistol that I hadn’t bothered to upgrade whaling into bosses who brushed them off like they were nothing. It reinforced the perfect mixture of horror and action, forcing us to m♓ake decisions or curse ourselves for not keeping our inventory in tip-top shape for when it mattered most.

There’s also a comedic absurdity to Leon stopping time to dig into his oversized suitcase in search of a giant bass to heal his injuries or a rocket launcher somehow stuffed into his little briefcase. None of it makes sense, and that is part of what makes Resident Evil 4 so brilliant. The island’s regenerators showcase the case’s potential for inducing anxiety best, since you’ll suddenly be required to switch attachments and ammo types all before fighting off enemies in close quarters who can kill y❀ou in seconds. Brief windows you can take ܫaway from the bloodshed to find the right item amidst a mess of your own making are so wonderfully macabre, and the remake loses that tension in favour of a modern sheen.

Fans have a fondness for the attache case too, with countless memes emerging of evil villagers or even fellow allies poking fun at Leon’s disorganisation in cute il🤡lustrations or pointing out the absurdity of the mechanic that we’ve always forgiven. Minutes at a time used to be spent carefully organising my case to make sure everything fit, or I’d stumble across a sick new weapon which I unfortunately had to give up because there wasn’t any room. Or there was, but a game of survival horror Tetris was required to make it happen. Now you can press a button and everything fa🌠lls neatly into place, and it bums me out.

You can tell me to ignore the auto-sort option and go about it the old-fashioned way, but the remake is clearly designed to take advantage of it. The same goes for weapon and item shortcuts: going back into my inventory to pick things out now not only doesn’t make sense, it isn’t what Resident Evil 4 Remake wants me to do. Capcom has decidedꦺ to ke🍌ep the attache case organisation around to please classic fans like me, although now it acts as a fun little gimmick instead of an essential part of the game’s design.
