There are a few different ways in which you can play co-opꦅ in the game, and it's pretty flexible no matter what way you choose to play. That said, there are some restrictions of its own to keep in mind, so let's show how every type of co-op works in Revenge of the Savage Planet and just what you can do together.
How To Play In Co-Op
In the game, co-op is restricted to two players. 🉐While the game is perfectly balanced around just a single player, it is also a game all about experimentation, exploring the worlds and defeating enemies in the 🍷most creative ways you can imagine. So it's great then that you can start co-op no matter where you are in the game, or even if you're just beginning a brand-new file.
From the main menu, you are presented with a trio of options after you press play. T𝔍hese are:
- Solo - Just you.
- Splitscreen Co-Op - You and a friend playing on the same device and screen.
- Online Co-Op - You and a friend playing on two different devices.
Online Co-Op always lets you optionally activate Crossplay if your friends have the game on a different platfo💜rm from yours.
Before you can load into a co-op session though, you must first decide the host. In Splitscreen Co-Op, this is done by ch♐oosing which save file you will be loading into. Since it is all done on a single profile, it shares your upgrades and worlds with whoever is y꧂our player two.
For Online Co-Op, choosing that option automatically makes you the host. You are then given the option to invite any of your friends, making them Player Two which has t🐼hem sharing your progress. If you are invited, you must instead share the progress of the host, such as their outfits and upgrades.
Another wonderful benefit of co-op is in life and death. In solo play, if you die, you're dead and have to revive back in the Habitat, and try to reclaim your lost resources. Not so in co-op. If one player is defeated, you have 30 seconds to revive them befo🎀re they are revived at the Habitat. Be𝔍tter yet, as long as you both don't die at the same time, you won't drop your resources even if you aren't revived since they're shared across both players.

Splitscreen
For splitscreen, you both share a single screen while playing from the same device. Just like the good ol' days of couch co-op. A nice touch in Revenge of the Savage Planet is that before you start up your co-op session, you can choose which side of the screen you want to be on, regardless of who is Player One or Player Two. No need to arg🗹ue over positions anymore.
Helpfully, the game also lets you mix input devices. Which this isn't something to consider on console, it is very helpful for PC. For example, Player One could use keyboard and mouse, while Player Two could use a controller. This can be set up while determining which side of the screen you are on, giving 🌞you m𓂃uch more flexibility in how you set up your session.
What input device you use and what side of the screen you are on cannot be changed after the session starts, however, so be certain before yo꧟u finish set-up.
Once you load into session, you will both spawn in the Habitat, and are basically free to do whatever you want. There are some restrictions here, though they are fairly reasonable. Anything that would already pause the game, such as bringing up most menus, will still do so, and cover the entire screen while doing so. ♚The exception to this is the radial eq🐟uipment menu which is restricted just to the screen of whoever opens it, and no longer pauses the game.
You must also both stay on the same planet, but you can go anywhere on them that you want. This means you can both exp🐭lore and discover things separately, with the results no matter what saving whether the host collected an item themselves or not. This makes exploring planets so much faster. In case you do lose your companion though, they are helpfully marked on the map so you know where to find them.
The habitat is an exception to this same world rule. While it is technically located on Stellaris Prime, it is loaded in as part of the current planet you are on, meaning one player can be in the Habitat and another on the currently loaded planet aꦐt the same time.
Just make sure you don't exit the Habitat through the front door or else youꩵ'll drag both players to Stellaris Prime instead.
Online Co-Op
With Online Co-Op, you get to have the whole screen to yourself without having to worry about your friend hogging the other half of it. That said, it does still have to be a friend. You can't randomly search for other players, so do make sure to bring a friend f🎐or y𝔍our online session.
While you do get the whole screen to yourself, many of the same restrictions apply as in splitscreen. Many menus will still pause the game for both players, and you both must still remain on a single planet, with the Habitat remaining as t🃏hat exception. Otherwise though, you get a bit more freedom in how yo♕u move.
There is also the addition of Crossplay. With this, you can play with friends regardless of the platform you are on. This is an option that must be toggled, however. As in splitscreen, it shares all progress made with th🉐e host, and plays much the same otherwise. You just have a lot more space in terms of the screen, and you won't take quite as much of a performance hit.
Can You Play The Whole Game In Co-Op?
Being a game that puts such an emphasis on being able to be played with a friend comes the next logical question - Can you play the whole game with a friend? And the wonderful answer to that is yes! There are no moments in the game where you can't have your friend along with you. They won't appe💞ar in cutscenes, but otherwi🔥se they will be with you every step of the way.
Since the game doesn't link co-op to a dedicated save file, it also means you can boot up the same save fi🍬le and play it solo as well, if you want.
Does The Game Support Drop-In Co-Op?
The biggest caveat of Revenge of the Savage Planet's co-op system shows here. There are a lot of little systems at play, with many of them being reworked once another player joins. How the screen gets shared, rendering two separate instances of the same world, how enemies interact with there being two players, and so on. Because of that, if a friend wants to leave a co-op session, the entire session must end.
This is the same for both splitscreen and online co-op. This isn't a major issue since the game does save automatically and quite frequently, though quitting and loading back in will bring you back to the Habitat, which is ♉a bit inconvenient if you're in the middle of something.
