One developer is learning the hard way the ✅pitfalls of working with paid streamers.

App💎arently, they might be really bad at space shooters.

Everspace is a Roguelike 3D space shooter from German indie team Rockfish Games. We say Ro✤guelike because, as with Rogue Legacy, you die. A lot.

The point of the game is to venture from system to system, accumulating materials and resources to eventually break free from a galaxy torn apart by war and ꦑcorruption. Each new system is harder than the last, and dying is just par for the course. Every time you expire you get to level🍒 up your pilot’s skills and ship’s abilities to be even stronger for the next run through.

The rest of the game is a very Freelancer-esque space shooter. Mouse and keyboard are standard, although some﷽ space-sim purists prefer the joystick setup. Either way works fine, but whichever you choose, just be sure you’re comfortable with the controls. As with all Roguelikes, Everspace doesn’t pull any punches.

That might’ve been the problem for Rockfish when they contracted a streamer for 5,000 euros ($6,100 USD) to play their game for 🔴two hours.

"But the worst thing that can happen is somebody with a lot of followers is just sh*t at playing the game. We had that. Actually it was an influencer we’d paid for,” Rockfi꧒sh dev Michael Schade at the Reboot Developer Conference.

The topic was on influencers and YouTubers, and how they can help market games. And while they can certainly be great targeted advertising, i🍷t’s a buyer beware situation. Rockfish Games went through an agency to hire their streamers, and of the 20 people hired only three or four worked out.

One, in particular, wasn’t so great. “Actually his opening line was ‘♋I h꧃ave to stop playing Destiny 2 now because I’m on a sponsored stream to play a sp𒐪ace game and I don♋’t like space games’.

“And he p⛦layed like a complete moron... a 𓄧f*cking moron."

Schade recommends next time to do the research on a stre⛎amer yourself before you hire them to play your game.

“Before you make a decision on pricing, I recommend you watch those videos and see if he or she is really good at playing a game. If they’re not g♌ood at playing the game we don’t want to have coverage. You have to pick very carefulꦅly. The next time we work with an influencer we’re going to make sure they are really good at a 3D space game otherwise we’re not going to do this.”

is available now on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and on GoG and 😼Steam for PC. But maybe don’t pick it up if you’re bad at space shooters. Or do, if you s൩till enjoy them. Everspace has an easy mode for those lacking in skill.
