While it can be difficult for a beginner to dive in, these games serve as a fantastic jumping-off poiওnt for newcomers to the roguelike genre.

While roguelike is an umbrella term given to most of these games and often used interchangeably with its subg💮enre, roguelite, there is a clear distinction between the two genres. Most of the games we know as roguelikes in modern titles are likely roguelites▨. So, what are the distinguishing criteria between the two?

What Are Roguelikes?

While a clear definition might not be important ಌto the players, a favorite pastime of many gamers and nerds is bei✤ng pedantic and hitting our friends with the dreaded "Um, Actually...".

The defining criteria of a roguelike was established by a development conference back in 2008, known as the Berlin Interpretation. This interpre൲tation requires eight design principles for a game to be considered roguelike:

  1. Random Environment Generation: Procedural and random generation of maps and environments is a key feature in roguelikes that enhances replayability.
  2. Permadeath: You don't keep your progression if you die in a roguelike, and start over from the beginning.
  3. Turn-Based: The combat in roguelikes is not time-sensitive. You and your enemies each take turns, and you can plan and strategize your actions.
  4. Grid-Based: The map is separated by a grid, and the character and enemies each occupy a distinct space on the map.
  5. Non-Modal: Movement, combat, and other actions such as healing or using items all take place in the same mode and can be performed at any time during gameplay.
  6. Complexity: With the combination of items, abilities, and enemies, a roguelike should offer multiple solutions and approaches to achieve the same goal.
  7. Resource Management: The scarcity of consumables such as healing potions and managing these resources throughout a run is a key element in roguelikes.
  8. Hack' n' Slash: While there can be secondary goals in the game, the main draw of a roguelike is fighting and killing dozens of monsters and enemies.

While many games share some of these design principles, to be considered roguelike on a technical level, a game must include all the criteria listed above. That is why most of the games we know today as roguelikes, are actually roguelites, and games that are considered roguelike by the Berlin Interpretation, such as Dungeons of Dredmor or Tales of Maj'Eyal, are also referred to as traditional roguelikes.

A common misconception about the difference between roguelikes and roguelites is that in roguelikes you don't keep any progression between deaths, but in roguelites, you do keep some form of progression and get stronger the more you play. While this is true, it's not the only thing that separates the two genres.

By definition, if a game only has some of the design principles of roguelikes combined with design elements from other 🐷genres, they are called roguelites.

The first two design elements, random environment generation and permadeath, to an extent, are the most common aspects🌄 of popular roguelite games. These are the main ways of creating the replayable cycle that we are fond of in the genre, and the combination of other mechanics gives the subgenre t🅺he variety that we see in modern roguelites.
