I’ve been interested in playing 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:Rollerdrome since I first saw footage of it a few years ago. The aesthetic — which draws on the work of comics artist Moebius to achieve a similar cel-shaded effect to 2021’s Sable — is gorgeous, with simple, but deep colors and bold, defined lines. I’m a sucker for a 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:Tony Hawkish arcade-y skating game, and the addition of third-person shooting to the formula m𓂃ade the proposition even more exciting. or some🌟 reason, I just never got around to playing it. I guess I was busy? I don’t have a good excuse.

But I’m remedying that now. Rollerdrome is free for PS Plus🥀 subs♑cribers this month, so I dropped into the game and am having a great time.

If you’re reading this in the future and/or don’t have a Sony console, don’t worry, it’s also on 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:Game Pass.

I always enjoy games that manage to make you feel like you have superpowers. It’s rare, and comes from a combination of cool abilities and expressive gameplay with a wide range of options. I love Insomniac’s 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:Spider-Man games, but at a certain point, you realize that the swinging is a little bit limited and a little too easy. Rollerdrome is harder than that, which means that you tend to bite the dust a few times at the start of each new arena. But once you start nailing difficult challenges, that feeling of superheroic skill kicks in. It’s the closest a game has gotten to making me feel like I’m Neo, riding up walls, entering slow-motion, and shooting an en🎉emy while upside down, guns akimbo. I can do skate fu.

Rollerdrome is standing on the shoulders of early 2000s giants to achieve that effect. The rollerskating system takes Tony Hawk's Pro Skater and simplifies it so that you can shoot and skate without tripping every other second. In Rollerdrome, you can't fall at all. If you land on your back, the game works with you, having your character somersault back onto her skates. Plus, a tutorial tells you early on that you don't need to keep pressing forward on the left stick to keep rolling, so you're nearly always moving. This gives Rollerdrome a constant sense of kinetic momentum.

This is where the game's other influence, 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:Max Payne, comes into play. If you were always skating at top speed, it would be difficult to land shots on your enemies, and you can't finish a level until you've eliminated them all. To make that blend of frantic motion and precision shooting work, Rollerdrome incorporates a riff on "bullet time," the iconic mechanic from Remedy's third-person shooter that allowed the titular hard-boiled cop to enter slow-motion with the push of a button. Bullet time let Max get some difficult shots off and look cool while doing it, as he flew through the air, like a dual-wielding Superman in a trenchcoat. It ruled. I didn't play Max Payne until 2022 and it was still a blast to jump to the side and kill a half-dozen enemies before you hit the ground, even 20 years later.

In Rollerdrome, you might ride off a half-pipe, flip upside down, and use dual pistols to rain bullets down on a sniper perched below. You might hit a nose grind on a rail, bust out your grenade launcher, take out a clump of enemies, then dodge out of your grind at the last second as a bullet whizzes by. Or, you might get some serious air and 360 into a shotgun blast to a heavily armored goon's head. The possibilities feel endless, even if they aren’t.

In most games, your character interacts with the world through one primary verb, which may or may not offer a lot of options. Mario can jump in many different ways, but jumping is the primary way you interact with the world. In 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:Call of Duty, you may shoot from cover, from out in the open, or from a helicopter, but shooting is your only real means of communication with the game world. That isn’t the case with Rollerdrome. You’re always interacting with the world in two distinct, but interconnected wayꦡs: skating and shooting. By combining Tony Hawk — where you’re always thinking about maximizing tricks — with Max Payne — where you&rsquo⛎;re always thinking about maximizing shots — Rollerdrome opens up new horizons of expressive play.
