Assassin’s Creed is a franchise that just loves to play fast and loose with history. The crux of the whole thing is blending the present day with the past ("characters" from the present have hopped into the lives of people from the past more times than is credible around here), and that gives the team a huge amount🧸 of scope to interpret history.
Recent titles have been set during the Golden Age oꦦf Piracy, the French Revolution and the height of Victorian Britain. There’s been some sense of historical accuracy throughout, in terms of the people and places you’ll see, but the whole Assassins and Templars conflict has been woven into the overarching story.
The latest entries, Assassin’s Creed Origins and Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, have stepped further back into the past than any games before them. The former is set in Ancient Egypt around the close of the Ptolemaic period (49-47 BCE), while Odyssey 🧸takes place during the Peloponnesian War between the Greek c📖ity-states of Athens and Sparta (431-404 BC).
Both titles were widely praised for bringing a huge, varied, and detailed take on the ancient world for players to explore (even ꦉif they did feature some rather questi💎onable easter eggs). It looks as though the next game’s going to keep up the ancient the﷽me 💎by taking us to Imperial Rome.
Last summer, Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot state💞d that there won’t be🔯 a main-series entry released this year. With such a long wait ahead for the next release, we don’t yet know for sure when or where it’s going to 🌠be set. Naturally, this has kicked the rumor mill into overdrive, and the latest theories suggest that a game currently knꦛown as "Legion" is on the cards.
As reports, a forum post has discussed the game at some length, suggesting that it will be set near the end of Marcus Aurelius’s reign, bringing his son Commodus and the Year of the 5 Emperor﷽s into the whole thing (around 193 AD). It will supposedly feature a ꦯchoice of two playable protagonists, Cassius and Lucia, descendants of characters featured in the previous two games.
The report goes on to say:
“The game will also supposedly feature more of the politics within the Assassins, as well as being more First Civilization intensive where the story is concerned. The map will feature mainland Italy as well as some parts of Gaul and Germania as a playable area.”
Along with a prospective release date of 2020, that’s about all we’ve got to go on. No, there’s not a shred of actual official evidence here (a lone blurry screenshot that looks very similar to Odyssey isn’t going to convince anybody), but it all sounds very in line with Assassin’s Creed. All we can do for now is wait and see if anything else comes to lig𓄧ht.
