Russell T. Davies brought back from its long-winded hiatus in 2005, resurrecting the show from its hibernation that was put in motion by the American film starring Paul McGann. It was a smash hit starring now-returning (at least, in the audio dramas) Christopher Eccleston and Billie Piper. After over a decade, RTD is returning for the 60th anniversary and the series beyond.

The 60th anniversary takes place in November 2023 and will likely star the 14th Doctor given that Jodie Whittaker - the current actor in the role - is departing after the next season. This will be the biggest anniversary event since the 50th which was helmed by Steven Moffat. It featured John Hurt's new incarnation, the War Doctor, David Tennant, and Matt Smith. The story revolved around them undoing their biggest mistake - wiping out the Time Lords.

Steven Moffat consulted Russell T. Davies for this event but RTD didn't return so-to-speak. In fact, he hasn't been part of Doctor Who since 2009 when he left the show alongside David Tennant in The End of Time, a Master-featuring story that brought back Classic Who villain and famous Time Lord Rassilon, played by 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:James Bond and Hot Fuzz actor Timothy Dalton.

"I'm beyond excited to be back on my favourite show," Davies stated. "But we're time-traveling too fast. There's a whole series of Jodie Whittaker's brilliant Doctor for me to enjoy, with my friend and hero Chris Chibnall at the helm - I'm still a viewer for now."

Chris Chibnall, who will be leaving alongside Jodie Whittaker, chimed in, "It's monumentally exciting and fitting that Doctor Who's 60th anniversary will see one of Britain's screenwriting diamonds return home. Russell built the baton that is about to be handed back to him - Doctor Who, the BBC, the screen industry in Wales, and let's be honest, everyone in the whole world, has so many reasons to be very excited indeed about what lies ahead."

What the story will entail, who it will star, and if it has multiple doctors, are all unknown entities. For now, we know that Doctor Who's greatest showrunner is about to return for the 60th and the subsequent series.
